**The Good:**

Unlike most films within the genre, such as the Roland Emmerich films, The Wave is based on historical facts and feels realistic most of the time. It’s not trying to go over the top for cinematic reasons.

From the disaster itself, this movie is an intense ride all the way until the end. It's difficult to breathe as we follow our protagonists’ struggle for survival.

The realism and real struggle help make this film feel properly scary and intense.

The tsunami and its aftermath have been realized extremely well, making everything feel all the more realistic.

Unlike most other films within the genre, The Wave is less about the disaster itself and more about the people struggling to survive.

The connection between the family members feels very strong and is the most enjoyable part of this film.

----

**The Bad:**

The Wave is essentially a traditional disaster movie with a Norwegian cast and setting. Every little plot detail feels familiar. It's almost comical how closely the film follows a typical disaster film structure. They had all the opportunities in the world to give the film a Nordic touch but didn't take it.

The first act struggles with building up the tension and it doesn't handle the character drama very well either. You'll end up waiting impatiently for the disaster to arrive

**The Ugly:**

Time to start rusting the experts, folks!

----

**VERDICT:**

_A traditional disaster film with a Nordic touch is at times gripping and feels realistic, even though it falls for many of the same genre tropes as the American variants._
