If you were evaluating yourself, how many stars would you give you? Serious question I'd love for you to answer in the comments!

I ask because, fittingly, my last film of 2019 reminded me of me: infrequently brilliant, well meaning, and not as clever as it thinks it is.

This Chinese film noir touches on all the tropes but rarely has anything new to offer (though the umbrella scene is one of the best I've seen all year!): Filming clichés slowly doesn't make them more artistic. So, out of a possible 10, I have 6 Fs to give, which is what I'd probably give myself, truth be told!

To be honest... I couldn't watch the movie to the end. That scene with the forklift and the following explanation in an incredibly bad and illogical way. Unfortunately I could only laugh about it because everything seemed more like a bad comedy from the 80s.

One of the best chinese movies I've seen so far. Great locations, beautifully executed in terms of camera and editing, good actors and acting. On top of that a realistic story that's told smart and exciting. With movies like this one China catches up to the top players Japan and Korea in Asian cinema

I wanted to like this movie so much more than I actually did. The movie is beautiful to look at and is fairly metaphorical. But two hours of a chase?
