Cool film. Given a little too much relevance today thanks to conspiracy theorists looking for movies that 'warn us' and what not. Yes it's about sheeple and those in control and I like that.
The film is fun and really comes to life when the glasses are worn. I'd have liked the They Live world to be bigger than some black and white signs, but they did the job and it didn't venture any deeper. It felt like a quick idea executed well. The fight scene was a bit long near the end. It slowed the movie down to the point where I wondered if it was ever going to end and what fun scene could have been made to take its place?

The cult film They Live by John Carpenter. Despite the cheesy soundtrack and the fact that the main character is played by a pro wrestler, the social and political commentary in this movie are amazing. The concept's so good: now Republican logic finally make sense when you pass them off as aliens trying to take over the planet. It's an entertaining movie that makes some great statements on society for anybody paying attention, and I bet you didn't know this line didn't originally come from Duke Nukem either:
"I have come here to chew bubble gum, and kick ass. And I'm all out of bubble gum." Check it out!

Being one of my favourite Carpenter outings, They Live is one of the late 80s movies I keep pulling off the shelf when time permits. It's still an hour and a half of pure fun and when Piper delivers one of the best one-liners in movie history, I'm transported right back to my childhood when my friends and I terrorized our teachers with that very line. If you haven't seen it...do yourself a favour and do.

True story... you can never trust the world..."I'm here to chew bubblegum.. and kick arse, and I'm all out of bubblegum... finally watched this fully... caught the half off it years back... not a bad film... I've never laughed so much at two guys beating the shit out of each other over some glasses haha

As soon as he put the sunglasses on, he started acting more as a one dimensional animated character and less like a human which cheapens the movie. but the plot is decent, reflecting on capitalism with societal commentary (and some more forward conspiracy alien theories, if you're into that). it doesn't go too deep and stays quite light so it's a simple movie

It's an insane wild ride! Loads of fun, with an amazing concept. This is the best kind of sci-fi. Roddy Piper as the lead is a little ridiculous, but it's a stroke of genius here. One of my favorites.

Damn man that fight scene between Roddy Piper and Keith David is SO intense... such a long scene!! I love this film in so many ways. John Carpenter is the reason i'm into horror! Classic film here!

I really like the concept of this. It's one of those topics that linger in our human minds long after seeing the film. I like the added sunglasses touch to contacts, and oh man that extended fight scene was the longest. Just when you thought it was over, they just keep on swinging, haha. Then jumping through portals which was very well shot, kudos John Carpenter. The music however could groove up a bit. The Blu-ray release from Scream Factory is definitely a must own. It would be interesting to see how this would fair in a modern take.

@roth
> It would be interesting to see how this would fair in a modern take.

I don't know, since most remakes have a tendency to overdo stuff I am not sure it would be a great idea.

Great movie, cheesy one liners broken up with drawn out fight scenes. Truly 80s.

Some cheesy fun, but Roddy Piper only has 1/5th of the screen presence that Schwarzenegger had around this time. The acting and dialogue are pretty shit, and as with a lot of Carpenter films, it’s lacking an emotional hook/interesting character at the core. The premise is pretty solid, at first I was afraid that it was headed into a dumb, conspiratory direction, but it ends up being smarter than that. The soundtrack’s interesting, but I’m not sure if synth- and sophistipop create the right kind of atmosphere for this film. In the end, I could honestly take or leave it. The whole ‘fake reality’ concept has been done better by other movies, and its critiques of capitalism are too surface level. Granted, that’s still a lot more compared to what the average 80’s crowdpleaser attempted, but there’s not much more to it besides those core ideas. It seems like it doesn’t want to fully bank on the strengths of its main star, because this really could’ve used more testosterone.

5/10

This is the type of movie, if you like it, you really love it. And if you don't, you equally really hate it.

In a weird and creepy kind of way the story actually makes sense. If you've ever wondered how some people buy in the shit that happens every day, here's your answer. The Alien part is a bit of a metapher, sure. But the unconcious influencing of people really could work. So, there is actually some substance in the plot. Makes for an interesting conspiracy theory.

But it is also fun and entertaining with some good one-liners and action typical for late 80s cinema. If not for that awful "adult movie" soundtrack (I guess paying royalties for actual songs wasn't in the budget) I'd rate it even higher.

6 minute wrestling match in the middle is what most people talk about...but the first 15 minutes are probably the best part of the film. Once the sunglasses go on, Roddy becomes more animated and less stoic and it infects the film . Still fun but not as great as some will lead you to believe.
