Set against the backdrop of a beautiful garden in the heart of London, this contemporary fairy tale revolves around the unlikely friendship between a reclusive young woman and a cantankerous old widower. Bella Brown is a beautifully quirky young woman who dreams of writing and illustrating a successful children’s book. After she is forced by her landlord to deal with her neglected garden or face eviction, she meets her match, nemesis, and unlikely mentor in Alfie Stephenson, a grumpy, loveless, old man who lives next door who happens to be an amazing horticulturalist.

An absolutely delightful movie! Jessica Findlay Brown shines in this kind of movie, in that romantic space between reality and fantasy. This movie is about the discovery of beauty, the journey from fear to adventure, the breaking of order for the chaos of beauty. I give it an 8 (delightful) out of 10. Pay special attention to the way they use the camera's focus in this film, notice how her view point of the garden begins out of focus and then sharpens as she begins to really see the hidden, yet vivid, beauty within. Notice how she goes from typewriter to precise graphics to beautiful sketches. So much to see in this movie, for those who love to linger in beautiful moments, that you just may have to watch it again.

Rushed ending, simple plot. But a good cast and one of Jessica's smiles manage to overcome most of the limitations.
