The movie might be showing its age, or maybe I'm showing mine. The structure just felt off. The pacing was much too slow until the last quarter. There's something grating about Maverick's character—there's supposed to be, but I couldn't really find anything to like about him. And of course the romance is entirely unnecessary, but that's been a Hollywood problem since long before this movie (and still is).

@dgw MY DEAR FRIEND, MANY OF THE HOLLYWOOD FILMS WITH THE VERY LOADED MALE STEREOTYPE, SHOULD PUT SOMETHING ROMANCE TO HAVE SOMETHING OF REACH AS TO THE FEMALE AUDIENCE.

I read a few reviews and in my opinion some people are way off. This is by far one of the best movies I've ever seen. Yes the soundtrack is a little repetitive and yes it's slow in the beginning, BUT THATS HOW YOU SET UP A STORY. Fantastic characters and storyline. Brilliant casting and acting from just about everyone. I could write for days about this film and the emotions it gave me but I'll just say I was born 18 years after this film released and despite growing up in the superhero film era with laziness like Kong vs Godzilla and Matrix 4, I can see that those are terrible films and this one is TOP GUN baby

Somehow I had never seen this movie before, a lot of films are a time and place, let’s just say I completely missed both. The jet flying but also hilarious that most of it is training missions, the romantic subplot is such a bore and really tanks most of the movie. Poor Goose got done dirty and his wife and children didn’t get to keep his dog tags because asshole Maverick whips them into the fucking ocean. I could tell you more but then I’d have to kill you.

Terrible pilot school melodrama with mandatory bromance and improvised teacher-student love relationship. Buckets of sweat, propaganda, and cocky smirks with homoerotic undertones. That wouldn’t be a problem if the movie wasn’t boring as hell. Maybe the flight scenes with the cheesy soundtrack on top were spectacular for their time, but unfortunately, my attention span hardly made it through. Everything looks like those random videoclips they use at karaoke.

****One Of The 'Coolest' Movies Ever****

Top gun, loved and loathed by many alike. The film that launched Tom Cruise's career. I'm a student and watching Top Gun for me is an amazing uplifting experience. A 'feel good' movie that could lift the worse of moods. The film executes cheese to perfection, yes there are some silly lines but there are some real good ones too! The aerial action sequences are truly amazing, and for 1986 nothing short of magnificent.
Top Gun is a film that achieves its objectives, to entertain. If you're looking for intelligent writing or mass thought provocation, this film isn't for you. Top Gun is best suited to those who desire to switch off their brain and enjoy.

My score: 7/10.

Top Gun is a movie that is full of cliché with a plot that follows along the lines of a blueprint that is typical for similar movies of that time. It was a movie for the MTV generation with lots of rock music. This wasn´t about the story. Teenage boys wanted to be Maverick and the girls fancied the love story (OK, probably not all of them but a lot)
It still can be an entertaining movie today if you keep that in mind. Just tune down the cheesy stuff. Enjoy the flight scenes, the soundtrack is still great and produced a lot of classic tunes.

This film was ok I guess but I just found it to be overwhelmingly boring. For an action it just seemed to have absolutely nothing going for it. I rated it slightly higher than I was originally going to because I must take into account the year it was released and the impact it must have had back then but still it could have been better.

Finally saw this one... I thought it wasn’t as good as everyone said but it is... way better than most of today’s film...

Val Kilmer was way underutilized in this movie, missed opportunity TBH

Recently revisited this with the 3D conversion, and while the conversion was cheap and cut rate, the original film still shines through. It may be dated these days, but still has good action scenes (even if you can't tell where the jets are going half the time) and a nice tale of friendship with Maverick and Goose. If you haven't seen it yet, catch it before the sequel hits the screens!

Top Gun is a riveting action film from director Tony Scott. The story follows a hot shot Navy pilot who’s sent to an elite fighter school to learn aerial combat tactics. Starring Tom Cruise, Kelly McGillis, Val Kilmer, and Michael Ironside, the cast is pretty good. But the real stars of the film are the F-14 fighter jets, and Scott does an excellent job at capturing the intensity and excitement of the aerial maneuvers. The soundtrack is also especially well-done, and features such hit songs as “Danger Zone” and “Take My Breath Away.” Adrenaline packed and incredible entertaining, Top Gun is an iconic ‘80s action film.

It's enjoyable, but whoever did the soundtrack pulled the greatest scam. It's just laziness. Either I'm on the highway to the danger zone or you're taking my breath away. Those were my only two options.

Didn't work for me. The plot is non-existent, the music is annoyingly repetitive and oftentimes oddly placed, and the entire movie rides on Tom Cruise's shoulders. I genuinely liked Goose more than Maverick and thought Maverick was kind of an awful guy beginning to end. Yet again, a movie I was told is a "must-see" disappoints. Maybe it's just not my cup of tea.

Very 80s. The music in this is top notch. The flying shots are great. The volleyball scene is incredible. Tom Cruise wearing aviators is iconic.
