I saw Umma at the theater with some friends. It is very relatable to people that have had stressful and traumatic relationships with their parents. However, I wish there were more character development and more back story to the movie. I also wanted to know more about the mother's relationship with the shopkeeper and who was Chris's father. The slap scene was funny. The conversations in the movie were mainly in English, but there were parts with Korean subtitles. Even without the subtitles, you could get the gist of what the characters were saying in Korean. It was indeed an exciting movie to see once.

A very weak horror film about a mother who turns into her mother and treats her daughter worse and worse. Except for a few passages, the film did not excite me at all.

2022 has become the year Sandra Oh has been giving us all that motherly transgenerational trauma on films

I wanted to love this, I excitedly reserved my viewing for a special time with popcorn and a mango sparkling water BUT it was a whole lot of nothing. There's a story here, and a theme of transgenerational trauma that is sketched out well, but there's just nothing to the story. It was like, things happened, the end. I love the entire cast and they all acted their asses off, but the script was the shell of what could have been a much better story with more depth.

the cast is good and the story hits for real if you had a traumatic childhood, including the ways that our parents' cruelty can seep into our own behavior despite all attempts to be a better, different person. not scary; i'd put it more in the category of supernatural drama—maybe even just drama since the supernatural aspects are never explicitly talked about by the characters.

at the end of the day this was a movie about trauma, and it did right by it.

An all-around unpleasant film to sit through. This is just another dull, lifeless horror film that suffers from being too restrained and poorly lit most of the time, with scares that are borderline comedic. It has an interesting premise with a lot of potential, sadly the poor script and bland direction squander what could've been a mildly passable horror.

Starts off very promising, but it becomes a different type of movie.

Annoying thought - Daughter was home schooled, from what sounds like a young age. just seemed odd she spoke like regular a teens, considering there's no TV

Sandra Oh is a great actress but this movie, while sometimes thought provoking as a relationship piece, is sorely lacking when it comes to tension or scares.

This is not horror. It's a drama.

Psychological horrors are my favourite kind but sometimes they can be a little too slow in building tension, Umma is the perfect example of this flaw.

Sandra Oh slays the screen as always, and while the story is a decent examination of how internalised trauma can manifest, it's really the last few scenes that make the movie just "ok". Some scenes are too dark (yes, even for a horror), and it teases too much only to rush the reveal in dialogue.

6/10
