The main problem with the movie is that if you´ve seen the first two you know what will happen so there isn´t much suspense. On the other hand I wouldn´t recommend watching it at first because than it takes away something from the earlier movies. In itself it is not a bad movie. So there is your dilemma.

@finfan you followed details better than me, the first one I honestly kept falling asleep it was so bad imo. To me this was best one, but I have a very short attention span as you can tell from what I just said. It's sad but I've been so spoiled by great writing, the okay writing puts me to sleep. It's probably good, but there's so much better overshadowing it.

@bluartisteyes I watched them all in succession which probably made some things stand out more to me. But I get what you're saying. Usually I need to watch previous movies in any series again, because I mostly forget what happened. Guess I watch too much.

Not sure if we needed this one. It was cool to see as a beginning to Underworld but due to the first movie we already knew what was going to happen. I will say though, Michael Sheen looks even better here than he did before and Bill Nighy is always a treasure.

Kate Beckinsale may be absent from this entry, but the return of Michael Sheen and Bill Nighy is a welcome one as the film delves into much of the backstory set up by the original. It's highly derivative, much like the previous entries, mimicking in particular the Helms Deep sequence from Lord of the Rings, and unfortunately the film can't quite escape the feeling that it is all rather pointless, given that the essential plot points have previously been revealed. Still, Sheen does well with what little material there is to work with and Bill Nighy is always entertaining.

I watched this about two years after the fourth movie (this is technically the third one, not sure why I skipped it), so it was almost like a reawakening of the series. I didn't remember much about the first two movies going in, and now I feel like I need to watch a recap of them to make sure I got everything before I watch the fifth one. Anyway, I've enjoyed the series so far, definitely one of my favorites.

The third entry on the Underworld saga was never my favorite…for obvious reasons. It‘s a prequel and doesn‘t feature Selene or brings her story forward. Still I must say, after rewatching this 15 years later it‘s a pretty good film. The basic story was already mentioned in the first film but of course is told here in much more detail. The strong suit of this film is definitely Bill Nighy and Martin Sheen who deliver a great acting job. Rhona Mitra is not too bad as well.

I'm rewatching this series after completing my bluray collection and I must say, the lore of Underworld is quite solid. Although I don't get why the vampires and lycans didn't die out after William and Marcus were killed. I'm sure there was an explanation but I've missed it. It's good to see Michael Sheen back as Lucian and how his story gets more fleshed out in this prequel. Oh and Bill Nighy is amazing as always.

Well after watch the Resident Evil series which I absolutely love and still being in the mood for more of similar o thought I wounder how these has aged, because
Resident Evil has aged exceptionally well, still hold up very very well today and they are still at the top of their game.
(Ha ha game, sorry).
So with that being said I thought what the Hella, not done the Underworlds in about 8yrs time to pull the old blu ray boxset out.
I always begin with this one, then I go into number one. And I have to say this one is not to to bad all these years later, yes you can feel the dates creeping up on it now but it's still interesting and entertaining enough to see you through to the end.
Who doesn't like Vamps and Werewolves having a major disagreement.
And just as Resident Evil did this franchise wants to make a name for itself off it's own back, doing it, it's own way.
14yrs later and it's still worth a watch.
Can I say the same for
"UW" 1
let's find out.

It's missing Kate Beckinsale for the most part but it is a totally acceptable action movie.

Underworld: The Rise of the Lycans is a thrilling action film and an exciting new chapter in the Underworld series. This prequel returns to the events that started the Vampire/Lycan War: the Vampire coven has enslaved Lycans to be their servants, but Lucian leads a Lycan rebellion after his lover is killed. Rise of the Lycans brings an exciting new vision to the series by creating an ancient world where Vampires control the realm. The cast is exceptional; Bill Nighy and Michael Sheen return to reprise their roles of Viktor and Lucian, and are joined by Rhona Mitra. The special effects are especially good and the action scenes are riveting. Additionally, the story is written remarkably well; crafting a suspenseful and captivating tale. Underworld: The Rise of the Lycans brings a fresh new vision to the series and reinvigorates it with new energy.

Please disregard all the previous favorable comments. I think they are completely misleading. In my view it is the weakest of the Underworld films, the cheapest, the shortest and with the worst direction. The action scenes are totally chopped up and edited in that infuriating manner that does not allow you to see what really is going on. I think the reason is laziness and a poor standard of the director. You see, when he edits those fighting scenes so much the viewers can see less and thus the artificiality and special effects are better hidden, he does not have to repeat the takes and prepare choreography with real actors for the days beforehand. The castle looks artificial and small, the story is predictable and simple, the duologue's laughable ("U were already free". "I cannot be free without you".) A disappointing prequel, not on a level of the two Underworld movies with Beckinsale.

Meh. Just a basic rehashing of what you already knew...or should have. While it wasn't "boring", you could easily leapfrog over this one in the franchise. The action scenes are the same and you've already seen the key part of this particular movie. Not a bad movie, but I found myself pausing this one **a lot** in order to do other stuff, just because it got really slow and unremarkable in a lot of places.
