Althought now nearly 14 years old it is still a very entertaining movie. There are the usual flaws that those kind of of stories almost always have, it comes with the territory so to say. Some similarities in style with Matrix are understandable because it wasn´t that long ago and a lot of movies copied it. i think it doesn´t hurt or diminishes Underworld.

All I want in movies with werewolves is that they have good transformation scenes, and this has that. Selene is a strong character that shows how badass she is without really telling us (many movies these days struggle with that), and the director was definitely going for style in his shots and they look great. You know who also is great? Bill Nighy.

One of my all time favorite movies. The art style of this movie is incredible and feels so original. Kate Beckinsale is literally killing it in the role as vampire warrior Selene. Also the world building is excellent as well.

This is _so_ bad. It's a decent storyline, but a storyline does not a story make. The dialogue, direction, acting, and fight/motion choreography of this entire thing was a debacle.

Underworld is a delightful blend of stylish action and horror. The story works, the acting is decent, and the action is actually quite good. The effects are decent enough when you consider that the movie is about 18 years old at the time of writing.

High art?

Certainly not, but it is certainly a movie with its own distinct style, and that makes one remember it.

That...and of course the fact that the ever-so-lovely Kate Beckinsale runs around in an outfit that does a number on my heart rate every time she is on screen.

If you didn't realize...I like Underworld a great deal. Too bad not all of these movies are this good...

Pretty run of the mill and not scary or too gory. The vampires vs. werewolves was a neat idea but it was mostly uneventful in execution. Kate Beckinsale is pretty good in this role.

Didn't care too much about the storyline involving the female protagonist, but liked the non-linear premise of the vampires v.s. werewolves history. However, that only became more apparent from the second half of the movie, which was also where it picked up.

[spoiler]Also, why was Lucian able to wake up again after the silver nitrate bullet, to be conveniently crucial to the plot before dying once more for good?[/spoiler]

Very entertaining action movie with a vampire twist. This is **NOT** a "horror" or even a "scary" movie; this is an action movie that just happens to use vampires and werewolves as its protagonists/antagonists. I agree with some that the action scenes are very Matrix-esque but I didn't have a problem with that. [spoiler] The incredibly glaring scene that essentially took the shine off almost the entire movie was the concluding fight scene with Viktor. It takes a full....what? ten seconds? 30 seconds?...for him to realize, _"Oh, my head has been cut in half by that razor-sharp sword and now it's sliding apart."_ That one scene - that ONE SCENE!!!! - was enough to almost make me regret watching the full 2-hour (and then some) movie. [/spoiler] I was able to finish watching it, and I can still say I enjoyed it as an action film. Recommend it _again_ as an **ACTION** movie and don't take it too seriously. Just have fun with it. :sunglasses:

It has a decent premise and ok action but ends up being totally forgettable.

Underworld provides a new and exciting vision of Vampire and Lycan mythology that’s both smart and entertaining. In the centuries long war between Vampires and Lycans, the tide is about to turn as the Lycans near the completion of a secret plan to gain dominance. With a cast that includes Kate Beckinsale, Michael Sheen, and Bill Nighy, the film is packed with compelling performances; especial Beckinsale who owns this film and proves to be a convincing action hero. The mythology is quite intriguing; with differing Vampire clans and hierarchies, and a complex interconnected origin shared by Vampires and Lycans. Underworld is a strong action/adventure film that has a compelling story and some great performances.

Egyedül, akit talán nem birok az Michael. Nem tudom miért, de az ő karakterével valahogy soha nem tudtam megbarátkozni, és még azt sem tudnám megmondani pontosan, hogy miért.
Jók az akció jelenetek, itt még a sztori is tök jó, bár egyszerű, de legalább követhető és nincsenek felesleges zagyvaságok. Imádom a sötét hangulatát, tipikusan egy kicsit véresebb urban fantasy vámpírokkal és vérfarkasokkal.
Igaz a vérfarkasok itt még elég gatyik, de engem még az sem zavart.

When Underworld was release in the theaters I didn't bother seeing it, because of the bad reviews. I recently rented it because the video store didn't have anything better to offer, that I had not already seen, and I must say that I was very much surprised. It was far better than expected. I especially liked the acting of Bill Nighy as the vampire lord Viktor, and Micheal Sheen as the werewolf leader Lucian. I think that the plot is quite strong, and it does not ruin the vampire or werewolf legend. What I didn't like as much was the werewolf costumes. I didn't find them convincing. But apart from that, it was very entertaining.

Too many holes in the script.

There is nothing remotely original in this film. It's action moments are heavily influenced by The Matrix films and the storyline involving a war between vampires and werewolves whilst intriguing on paper, is largely wasted. There are hints to a largely mythology and both Bill Nighy and Michael Sheen seem to be the only ones not taking this all too seriously, but the film is more obsessed with style - it's Eurotrash-drenched fashion styling already looking dated. It is however entertaining - if ever there was a film that the term "guilty pleasure" was invented for this is it and it is all held together by Kate Beckinsale who is the main draw here - convincing as an action heroine but also providing the only really interesting character.

A centuries old vampire warrior who's "famous for her strength and werewolf-hunting prowess, surrounded by intensely sexy immortals and can catch dick anytime she wants, up-ends her entire social order when she "becomes smitten" with a slice of sentient white bread. It's the purest juvenile power fantasy and a stylish mall-goth soap opera, and thanks to the talent involved, it's completely engrossing.
