Unlocking the Cage is a well-made documentary that follows a team of lawyers, in and out of courtrooms, as they fight to free specific chimpanzees. UtC does a great job of being a fly on the wall as the proceedings unfold.
While the bulk of the runtime is simply people talking, there are moments that show animals: in labs, in slaughterhouses, being hit, being shot - most of this takes place right at the beginning; it's fast, and nowhere near as graphic as other footage that exists.
The crux of the documentary is the question of "what is a person?" Animals are people - which should not be misunderstood to mean animals are human - animals are not things. Your phone, your computer, your house, those are things. Chimpanzees, apes in general, dogs, cows, cats, pigs, et al are not things.
I highly recommend this to anyone who is interested in animal rights. Even if you are not, I'd ask you to set aside your speciesism and open yourself to the idea that maybe the way humans have treated animals, for far too long, isn't right, and never was.

“If you really care about animals, then stop trying to figure out how to exploit them 'compassionately,' just stop exploiting them.”
