I hoped I would be more terrified after what I'd been hearing about the movie. A little bit disappointed by that. And I felt unsatisfied with the ending. I thought there would a clear connection between all these tapes. It felt a little pointless. But most of the segments (tapes) were really good though, on an individual basis.

Turn the lights out. Keep telling yourself that what you are watching is 'real'. Open your mind. And enjoy.

This movie was kinda interesting, its basically a collection of short strange horror things but in a found footage style, if you like that style you should definitely give this a shot. Some of the stories were genuinely quite well executed. I guess you could say it fits in the old school 'Tales from the Crypt' formula to an extent too.

3 Thoughts After Watching ‘V/H/S’:

1. As a fan of found footage films, I was intrigued by the idea of a found footage anthology. But this kinda felt like found footage overload.

2. It would’ve been nice if the central plot came together and tied up everything a bit more. I thought it was strange to end on yet another story.

3. The tales themselves were pretty mediocre and suffered from some subpar performances. A couple fairly-surprising twists here and there, even some nifty visuals in the final story, but there was nothing that stood out enough for me to recommend this to another found footage fan.

The first short is great (Amateur Night), the others range from mediocre to bad.
"The Sick Thing That Happened to Emily When She Was Younger" has invented the "computer screen horror genre" but there are much better films shot in this way (for example Host 2020).
The story that links all the shorts together is crap, it's also supposed to be one vhs tape but the action is obviously shot by multiple cameras and some of them are clearly digital cameras. Furthermore the first story is recorded by a pair of spy glasses, why they are seeing it on a vhs tape?
I have the impression that this was a fun and innovative take on the horror genre in 2012, but it hasn't aged so well now.

It's a weird movie, the main storyline doesn't fit the stories INSIDE the stories. Some of them are nice and scary but some are just not.

Gratuitous and incoherent, V/H/S fails to effectively utilizes the found footage genre. Presented as a horror anthology, a group of vandals break into a house in order to steal a VHS tape and during their search they run across several tapes, each with some kind of horrific footage on it. While the concept is interesting, the execution is extremely poor. Additionally, there’s a distinct lack of sympathetic characters; in fact most of them are reprehensible. There are a few scares and moments of tension, but V/H/S is just too chaotic and mean spirited.

I think we can all agree that found footage films can be hit or miss, and the genre has been done to death. However when you come across a movie with a unique premise you gotta sit there and watch. Were all of them high quality? No, but were they good for what they are? Yes! Give this film and it's sequel a chance. But whatever you do don't see VHS Viral.... And don't turn off the lights!!!

Good for a Saturday night scare flick with the family. It's not exactly Citizen Kane....but it's not trying to be either.

I did not enjoy this at all. Look, I can handle a found footage movie, I've seen the big ones. I don't like them, but it rarely has to do with the handheld aspect of it. But this movie......oof. So hard to watch. The first 30 minutes between the thieves and then the first story, it was like the camera was strapped to one of those paint can shaker machines. And the stories were just okay to me although I was barely rooting for any of the characters. Not for me. I will say I enjoyed two aspects of it: It was pretty realistic when the footage would stop. A lot of times in these movies you're like "why would they still be taping?" This movie was pretty good about bailing when you think you would bail in that situation. Also, I enjoy Joe Swanberg as an actor. He's good at being a crabby, annoying yet endearing kind of guy. He was hilarious in You're Next.

A bunch of short stories kinda tied together but not by much. Some of them are good, but I would say the bad far outweigh the good here. Would not recommend.

I usually enjoy anthologies but in all honesty, if I hadn't read up on this prior to watching it, I would've had no idea what I was watching. It was extremely disjointed, the stories had absolutely nothing in common, and they weren't tied together anywhere throughout. It was very hard to follow, and if you're not used to handheld camera films, this one will definitely throw your equilibrium right out the window. I had a hard time following it, and most of the stories were...meh. Not worth watching. I'm listing it here only to remind myself, _"You watched this once. Don't make the mistake of doing it again."_ This just wasn't all that great.

Very solid found footage anthology with a very creative concept that’s executed really well. It's so refreshing and really fun to watch. A lot of found footage films are afraid to push boundaries but this is an exception. It makes no sense at parts but does a great job of getting under your skin and leaves you with a couple of question marks (in a good way). Some of the segments are better than others as you'd expect. The framing device is probably the weakest but the stories are actually decent. The 1st (Amateur Night) and 5th segment (10/31/98) are creepy suspenseful shorts and they keep me figuring out what's really going on. The twisty stories like the 4th segment (The Sick Thing that Happened to Emily when She was Younger) is very interesting to see with unpredictable twist in the end, but the 3rd (Tuesday the 17th) doesn't make any sense and the twist on the 2nd story (Second Honeymoon) isn't as shocking or scary as it wants to be.

10th Anniversary

If I were rating this just on the segment "Amateur Night," I would rate this a 6-7. It was really well done and got me pretty spooked and I was curious to see more. On the other hand, the other segments were a snoozefest. Also how did all those tapes arrive in one place? I need to know!

Almost gave this a 6, then remembered it's found footage so I have to like it.

But it's also an anthology film, which means I don't have to like liking it.

If the climaxes of the individual shorts were as good as the set ups, _V/H/S_ (which, in this movie stands for "men are **V**irtually **H**undred percent **S**cumbags") might've been a horror classic.

At it is? Well, at least it's found footage.

Anthology’s and horrors are my favourite films but this was just garbage. VHS viral (6/10) was just average but this one was very poor (2/10). Skip it and watch VHS 2 (8/10).
