Valerie, a Czechoslovakian teenager living with her grandmother, is blossoming into womanhood, but that transformation proves secondary to the effects she experiences when she puts on a pair of magic earrings. Now seeing the world around her in a different light, Valerie must endure her sexual awakening while attempting to discern reality from fantasy as she encounters lecherous priest Gracian, a vampire-like stranger and otherworldly carnival folk.

Watched this fully expecting to hate it as i dislike surrealism. And while i can’t say I actually liked it, it was far better than i expected. The general atmosphere and images kept it going. Wouldnt be aboe to give u any sort of literal interpretation if it tho. 5-6/10

Finally watching this after having it sitting on dvr for so long (TCM pretty much fills the dvr). This is a peculiar and incredibly visually alluring film that mixes horror fantasy with a compelling coming-of-age tale. It's equally disturbing and whimsical, filled with delightful imagery and symbolism that keep you riveted. It finds the perfect balance between the lighthearted imagery with creepy imagery and the curious tone is there throughout. Every single moment of this film plays out like a dream and you'll have no clue on what direction it'll take you. The music used is so magical and just adds to the overall feel of the film. Did I mention it's under 80 minutes? Absolutely wonderful! I'm pairing this with _Black Moon_ which is also a coming-of-age folk horror and on my dvr.

Such an interesting - and disturbing - perspective in a coming of age. "Valerie and Her Week of Wonders" is visually stunning and even if it's not perfect as a storytelling, it still mesmerizes the audience for so many bold (and maybe a little agressive) choices. 4,5/5 for those "Carmilla" references.
