Bumped up the rating a notch for nostalgia but hoo boy the special effects did not age as well as I remembered. The acting is also less than you'd expect from such a cast, largely due to the silly accents. However it is a fun, over-the-top supernatural action/ comedy with some beautiful scenes.

Horrendously awful doesn’t even begin to describe how terrible a film Van Helsing is. The way in which Stephen Sommers bastardizes the classic Universal Monsters is appalling. And the acting is beyond bad, but not as atrocious as the special effects. Van Helsing is an abomination upon film that defiles everything in it.

Solid action about notorious vampire (and werewolf, and ...) hunter Van Helsing. I expected more, to be honest: the movie is just not very entertaining!

A massively underated film. Take it for what it is, an action/fantasy film, and enjoy the effects. Expect a solid gothic horror based on the book Dracula and you will miss the point completely. Oscar winning performances? Nah. Enjoyable action ride similar to films like The Mummy, absolutely.

wild wild west is actually a lot better. at least the people don't act like they are retarted there.

Here the characters are so stupid you'd think they are related to Paris Hilton. The only good thing about this movie are the sets and Hugh Jackman. I can't believe how bad the acting from the other actors is omg ;o

Dated CGI aside, I do not understand the hatred for this film. You got classic monsters, you got great action, it's both funny and exciting, and you got Hugh Jackman and Kate Beckinsale (which is damn sexy in this btw) for crying out loud. What more do you need?!? Nah... leave your film snobbery with the Criterion Pasolini box you bought just because you thought you should, and enjoy this one for what it is... A pretty decent little monster film... well worth your time... Trust me!!!

Stupidly bought on Apple TV (iTunes) way back when we all thought it was the future and not the major misstep it probably is... and watched on Apple TV today. I really need to get a decent version of this on blu-ray...

I can be bored during it I admit. The Mummy from the same director is a lot more fun. Dracula is about as intimidating as Count Chocula and he also looks like Count Chocula.

I remember really enjoyed this movie when I first saw it when it first came out

but man I feel like I would hate it if I watched it now

it's a huge departure from the way Van Helsing is traditionally depicted he's usually a more educated intellectual hero then physical badass gadget welding version in this movie

I do like the idea of the three classic monsters of the universal films being kind of thrown into this movie
but there's so much bad CGI

a lot of overacting especially from the guy that plays dracula lol

I've watched this movie many times, it's not perfect but it's not as bad as some say. I liked it a lot as a kid so nostalgia is definitely affecting my judgement.
Decided to rewatch it now because i read they were planning a reboot of the movie.
As bad as some people think this movie is, i'm sure the new one is going to be much worse.

A few years back gave this one an 8, now it must be said that it did not age well :)). Now it's back to 6.5 from my side, so let's say 7, not a waste of time but clearly not how I remembered it (some small "viewing breaks" were required at some point).

I like the production design a lot: the sets, costumes and props. And it has Jackman and Beckinsale whom I both like to watch. I can ignore the dated CGI as it is always hard to judge more than a decade later. It doesn't really help the movie, though. But ultimately a movie is only as good as it's story and that is the issue for me. Not very engaging and I couldn't make a connection with the characters. It actually felt more like a bad Indiana Jones movie.
It is a movie in between - not awful or painful to watch but also not remarkable enough for a recomendation. I'd say for a fan of any of the actors it's OK but if you haven't seen it already there really isn't much reason to do it now.

This movie sucks. I remember seeing it at a drive in when it opened and being so so angry at it. Watching it again now for We Hate Movies and guess what, it still sucks.

After having seen _Spiderman 2_ the night before, this move sure did not hold up. Combining characters from several different classic novels has already been done _League of Extraordinary Gentlemen_ but this was just too much. Dracula needing Dr. Frankenstein to make his offspring live was over the edge. The movie was filmed so dark that at times it was extremely difficult to tell what was happening, but I believe this was by design and follows in this recent annoying cinematography style. I thought Hugh Jackman was great and the Friar was well played, but Dracula's wives...not so much.

Love the idea of this. The delivery on the other hand… yikes. Although I will say, the werewolf transformation concept is still one of the best I have seen. I wish we could get an updated version with a little less humor.
