_Velvet Buzzsaw_ tries to juggle with too many balls in the air. There's the message ball, the satire ball, and the horror ball and, as anyone will tell you, if you have three balls, none of them get enough attention.

I'd give it one star if not for Jake Gyllenhaal performance. Such missed opportunity with this outstanding cast. Some of the characters were very interesting, the rest were meh. The horror part of the movie was the worst. It could have been sooo much better. I wouldn't recommend this movie to anyone.

This really is 2 different movies squashed together.

One part is a satire of the pretentiousness within the art world, and it is really great.
The other part is a horror film about moving paintings, and it is generic and boring.
It only gets interesting when the moving paintings are used to delve into Jake Gyllenhaal’s character.
The other characters are just not that interesting.

5/10

I found this film entertaining but... not as enjoyable as I expected.
When I first watched the trailer I was excited because the idea was interesting and there were very good actors on board.
Nevertheless, the "horror" in this movie, completely blew it for me. If they would have gone with a more psychological damage rather than violent and impossible deaths, it would have had other effect (like, the first one hangs himself right? He might have done it driven to the effect that the art piece had on him, but nope. Then Toni Colette's death happened, and that was way too much for me to keep taking the movie seriously). It looked like a class B movie but with Netflix's budget.
I agree with all other comments already posted, that Gyllenhaal gave an amazing performance. Feels like that's the only reason that I don't consider this movie a waste of time.

Very interesting concept about art coming to life. I feel as if the movie wasn't used to it's full potential it never really fully dove into the idea and rolled with it kind of just danced around it to create mystery which was there but also could have been utilized better. I feel this movie missed the mark at times where maybe music or a better score or something could have been used better in certian scenes to make the particular scene scarier or more tense and some things raised questions like how air pods and iphones are in this movie then Gyllenhaal's character has a flip phone. Performances are good all around and although the movie definitely could have been better it's still good.

No no no no no no no NO!! What a great start to a film: the LA art scene via a Devil Wears Prada vibe - freakin' cool! Then the mystery of
the dead painter Dease
shifts us into an unexpected gear but the ride is now more intriguing. But alas, falling down a slippery slope never felt so contrived and we soon discover that the filmmakers attempted to mesh together two different genres!

*Ugh - NOOOOOOOO!!!!

The most frustrating thing about Velvet Buzzsaw is that it could've been great - only if they connected the dots in an intelligent self-serving way to make the story rock solid. Instead, we are left with many unanswered questions that derive from our disbelief:
how did Dease die? Why do the paintings move? Who is the evil spirit in them and why does he want to kill anyone who makes money off of the paintings? How come other artwork that is not Dease's comes to life? Why was John Malkovich's character even in the film?!
Watch it for a lesson on how a film can easily mutant into a multi-genre monster when there is no integral vision.

It seems like all the comments about this film are the issues I thought while watching.
The film just never quite picked a lane and was worse for it. Never being quite sure of the message and 'rules' of a film is never good. Plus with characters swinging from likeable to 'who cares' added to my lack of interest.

Greed, it mostly ends badly. Simple plot with a expedition of weirdness with a splat of red. I didn’t think much of (Jake Gyllenhaal) acting skills in this role, I thought it was poor from him, saying that the film didn’t have any high grades either but it was watchable.

Quite a fun watch, though I do think that both the satirising of the art world and the horror aspects could have been pushed further, been more subversive. As it is, it's an ok dark comedy with horror elements. The cast are wonderful, and there are some absolute gems in terms of references and dialogue that encapsulate just how ridiculous the art world at the upper end of the market can get. Given the premise is quite a basic one, I would have hoped for a little more substance amid the style - or perhaps that's precisely the point, heh.

Is bisexual horror a genre? Cause it's certainly my favorite one. Morf is a bisexual, feminine, intellectual and a character that says much about the elite art world. It's also a nice horror, not scary or revolutionary. Aesthetically visually pleasing, and good acting!
