All the moral complexity and historical sensitivity of a Disney sequel.

At least Judi Dench is brilliant. As usual.

@luckynumber78 And to think that last week, my mom wanted to go see a movie and tried to talk me into this one…

Surprised at some of the negative comments on this page. Personally, I thought it was a royal treat. Shot through with a healthy dose of irreverent humour, this 'mostly' true story highlighted a piece of British history I knew very little about. Splendid performances from the cast, especially from her majesty herself, Dame Judi Dench. God bless you ma'am.

Victoria & Abdul is a historical farce that didn't have the common decency of being even the slightest bit ironic. Watch Viceroy House instead.

@saint-pauly isn't that fake history though. Victoria and Abdul is based on real history instead.

I actually enjoyed this movie a lot. You can of course not believe everything historical but it's nice to hear about Abdul in general – I'm not sure how well know he is outside of the (former) British empire.
Judi Dench is amazing as always.

I was looking forward to this because of Judi Dench, because of the newly discovered (2010) historical source material, because of its central character (Regis Victoria). But, its opening credits tag line sets the tone, "This is a true story - _Mostly_". Great performances (do yourself a favour and watch anything Adeel Akhtar is in), amusing situations, and heart wrenching gravitas, as only Dame Judi can bring, when called for. This movie did not disappoint. I give it a 7.5 (really good) out of 10. [historical drama]

I don't like that it brushed over the monarchy's role in colonialism but it was a compelling relationship and movie nonetheless

So much of history is buried under the lies of the victors. It's nice that once again, a film is able to reveal what really happened, and the terrific cast, art direction, and cinematography bring us right into the story as well. Life indeed is by turns comic and tragic; this is illustrated well here.

I enjoyed this. The problem with this movie is the tone of it. It goes from extreme comedy to extreme drama. You can't do that. You either should decide to be a comedy, a drama or a dramedy. You can't shift tone too much.

A really wonderful film with an amazing performance by Judi Dench. But no surprise here, she's a living legend.
I read about this special relationship on Wikipedia once and found out afterwards that there's a film about it too. So naturally I had to see it and was not disappointed, even though it's not historically accurate...at least not all of it.
