"Death to Videodrome! Long live the new flesh!"

David Cronenberg is an unpredictable force that even after watching most of his films, you still don't get use to the usual trademarks. In "Videodrome", he focus on what viewers enjoy the most in entertainment. Sex in romance, violence in horror, and the mystery that drives the plot forward. He sometimes knows us too well, it's scary.

Even after it's over the movie leaves you questioning and having this dark impression on you. Everything is f**ked up and you can't help to look on. TV messes up the mind, but movies can make you maniacs.

Interesting sci-fi horror. The plot reminds me of real government experiments but uses media as the control drug. It questions reality by asking what constitutes as a real experience. Does media shape us more than we realise?
It was fun to watch.

This has been on my list for years but I never got round to it. Wish I had sooner. It's a pretty great sc-fi, horror, thriller, mindbender mash up which gives the feeling of being "ahead of it's time". James Woods is excellent as the sleazebag tv executive.

What's it all about? Probably a mixture of messages involving faux outrage at TV/movie violence and corporate greed. Really good ending too. Cronenberg was a proper visionary.

7.8/10

I honestly can't believe how awful this movie was. The premise, all the good reviews... I was very excited to see this. One of the most disappointing movies of all time.

Are you ready to get overstimulated, open those neural floodgates?!

It's Cronenberg so you expect amazing practical effects mixed with some grotesque body horror and an unhealthy dose of erotics gone wrong, well it certainly delivers on that. ***Videodrome*** is getting more and more relevant by the day with it's commentary on media influence and how it can reprogram our minds and ultimately our body (maybe one day)—"It isn't too naive or too sweet, it's contemporary!" Brilliant score, beautiful cinematography, great pacing and fabulous performance from James Woods. The television screen coming alive is such an iconic moment. Cronenberg has a twisted mind, how can you even think of something like an electrified wall of clay to torture people? Mind-bending ending, I love it!

>*"Whatever appears on the television screen emerges as raw experience for those who watch it. Therefore, television is reality, and reality is less than television."*

Just checked Videodrome off my list thanks to Tubi… took me a while after the credits to form a semi coherent opinion, but I'm glad to know I'm not the only one stumped by the ending. But yeah, it was semi enjoyable, only because I'm not super into the body horror gore, and even with the open ended third act (a strong finish) notwithstanding, there were a couple other things that didn't make sense or felt overdone.

A strange, demented film, but I would expect nothing less from Cronenberg.

Some of the imagery here is shocking with objects like video tapes and televisions coming to life. James Woods turns in a strong performance and his poor character goes through some awful transformations.

TV will surely ruin your mind.

As predicted by the film itself, we eventually got to the point that the images shown by the “Videodrome” would hardly have any impact on us, if not as captivating set pieces. However, it’s still a poignant commentary on the way media can “reprogram” our ideals and mold our perception of reality. At times it gets so convoluted and incoherent that it’s hard to figure out what really happened, but that’s part of the fun.

one word: BIZARRE lol
vagina-like stomach opening? meh.
At the beginning I actually thought I knew what it's about..corporate wants to give numb viewers more thrill..then it became surreal and I think it just went downhill from there. It lost its point.

A dash of Canadian sci-fi / horror schlock that's very much a product of its era. James Woods and Deborah Harry (yes, that Deborah Harry) play a pair of masochistic voyeurs in search of a new thrill, which they find in the form of a pirated snuff TV station. The plot staggers this way and that, bouncing without pause from '60s comic book cheesiness (one of the primary foils is dubbed Professor Brian Oblivion) to insane, grotesque '80s gore effects (Woods's character sprouts a jumbo-sized vulva in his chest, then feeds it videotapes). For roughly the first thirty minutes it's actually a legitimate, if silly, gripe about the dangers of an over-stimulated society, but once its imagery begins to venture into the surreal it really loses the plot. Woods's abdominal slit is just the tip of the iceberg. Occasionally enjoyable as a ridiculous display of bad taste and hilarious special effects, it grossly belabors its only point and fails to reward courageous viewers with the first hint of a resolution.

No matter how many times I watch it, it doesn't get any less confusing. It's a bit pretentious, but it's got a cool message at its core. I think at least. haha The movie also sports some wild imagery.

I loved Debbie Harry in this, but it’s hard to appreciate anything about James Woods these days. The film itself made a Very Important Satirical Point but was ultimately sort of goofy. I loved the special effects, though, and there were some decently creepy movies. But in the end it felt a little like the 80s version of Fight Club–something those creepy dudes in film class would wax on about in disturbing ways.
