I give it a 7 for the over the top action sequences, but a 3 for anything NOT related to the war scenes. Patriotic, hokey, norman Rockwell sentiments of America that are disgustingly mawkish as they as cliche.

One of the best military stories ever portrayed. Found myself fighting back tears at several points in the movie, probably because I'm a combat veteran and I know the anguish and hopelessness these guys were portraying. This has to rank among my favorites of all times. Definitely worth watching even though it's 2+ hours in length.

A lot of war movies show how America is the best and are heroes, but I like that this showed both sides of the story and how they tried to make it look like America won. Innocents sent to die for nothing and were never appreciated when they got home, and Mel Gibson conveys that emotion so well with just a few expressions in his face.

We Were Soldiers is a powerful and gritty war film from writer/director Randall Wallace. Based on a memoir, the story follows the Army's 7th Cavalry as they engage in the first major conflict between American and North Vietnamese forces. The writing is especially good, and does an excellent job at keeping track of the battle and at developing the characters. Featuring an all-star cast that includes Mel Gibson, Sam Elliott, Barry Pepper, Madeleine Stowe, and Keri Russell, the performances are quite impressive. And, Wallace does an outstanding job at capturing the brutality of war; giving a remarkably realistic depiction of combat conditions. Additionally, the score perfectly complements the film.

I would more consider this a battle movie instead of a war movie. True that we get to see some of the strategies from the opposing forces but as far as it being a movie, something is missing. Mel turns in a strong performance, the epitome of leadership with his men. Throughout the battle he stays calm issuing orders alongside cold as ice old school Sam Elliot. Then they juxtapose this with the telegrams being delivered to the widows like they were sent by the internet instantly home. Again, GREAT battle movie. The thing I loved about it -- at the end when they are listing the men who died in the 3 day battle they do not list their ranks. When a man gives his life to his country, it does not matter if you were a private, Lieutenant, Colonel or a non-combatant, you've made the ultimate sacrifice and are a hero in my book. What happened to Madeleine Stowe's lips? It's like she played Dig Dug but they puffed her lips instead. Who is telling these actesses that looks good?

Great movie. For the politics behind it I recommend HBO's Path To War.
