There’s a moment in the film where Lavinia tells a story of when Emily found some motherless dead kittens and conserved them in jars in the basement for when their mum eventually came back and i thought “this movie is so odd how did the screenwriter even come up with this stuff”. Turns out the story was real. Emily Dickinson is my favourite person of all time and I’m obsessed with the way every piece of media made about her feels like a weird gay fever dream.

[LGTBIFestival] The director adopts the lesbian version of the life of Emily Dickinson, opposed to her condition as a solitary and conservative woman. This erased of the ambiguity in her work is showed with a satirical sense of humor. But the director succeeds more in the overall portrait than in the more personal description, so the main character is precisely the one who appears fuzziest, least defined.

Molly Shannon stars as Emily Dickinson in the satirical comedy Wild Nights with Emily. Based on a stage play (and it shows), the story follow a supposed homosexual relationship Emily Dickinson had with her sister-in-law. Unfortunately it tries to mix period drama with farce and doesn’t quite get there. And the actors don’t seem to be on the same page either. Also, the directing is pretty weak, as many of the scenes come off looking staged and the backgrounds and settings are rather dull. Still, some of the comedy bits work, and there’s some cleverness to the script in how it uses a frame story with an unreliable narrator. Wild Nights with Emily isn’t all bad, but it doesn’t translate to screen very well.
