As a whole, I find this film to be an enigma because audience members can take away just about anything from it. It can be called an "authentic coming-of-age" story of a rural teenager that experiences hardships and grows from her experience of searching for her father. It can also be called a "boring" film about a teenager searching for her dad's body. Furthermore, it can be described as a "slow-burn" that helps to reveal the rural atmosphere, helping to emphasize the characters, underlying issues, and gray area that surrounds these scenarios. It can also be called a "slow" film that doesn't produce any excitement for its nearly 2 hour run-time. I find myself agreeing with both sides, which may seem like a contradiction, but it cannot be denied that both sides have merit. I find this film to be an authentic film that depicts the life of a rural teenager living in poverty, with relational ties that help to create tension. It is also a slow film that can progress too slowly, which may help some to soak in the atmosphere, but it can also bore someone for the entirety of the film. I cannot say that this film is a masterpiece, but for the right people, this film can be described as a good effort. I enjoyed it, but I didn't love it. In a way, this might have been the intent of the film, since it wasn't created for the intention of "being action-packed." It describes the possible story of a rural teenager residing in the mountains of the Ozarks, with believable circumstances regarding drug use, family issues, and a feeling of helplessness that not just rural folk can relate to, but the audience in some way as well. It may not be everyone's cup of tea, but I don't think that watching the hardships of a real person would be that interesting either. It's meant to be dull and slow, which helps to uplift the realism that this film strives to foment. I found this intent and execution to be admirable, not perfect, but adequate enough for the film to stand on its own. It's a solid 7 out of 10, which doesn't present itself as a masterpiece, but it's an authentic tale that will at least land some impact.
