When Leonard Vole is arrested for the sensational murder of a rich, middle-aged widow, the famous Sir Wilfrid Robarts agrees to appear on his behalf. Sir Wilfrid, recovering from a near-fatal heart attack, is supposed to be on a diet of bland, civil suits—but the lure of the criminal courts is too much for him, especially when the case is so difficult.

Many people rate this as Christie’s best movie adaptation. I disagree and find several others to be better. It’s good of course but I much prefer Death on the Nile from ‘78 which is my favorite. It has great actors, much more interesting characters and possibly the best on locations sets of any film. As for this movie, Tyrone Power’s acting is pretty awful. The way he speaks makes it seem as if he is repeating memorized lines - which he is of course lol but he’s not supposed to show it. What’s great about this film IMO is Christie’s plot and not so much the movie itself. Plus court room dramas suck. There I said it.

Such a disappointment of a film, that is promising a great storyline and an end from the start. I'm giving it a 6/10, just because it kept me thrilled until the final scene.[spoiler] I'm sorry but I'm not okay with the ending. Was it really supposed to be a plot twist?[/spoiler]

_"Touching isn't it? The way he counts on his wife."_ _"Yes, like a drowning man clutching at a razor blade."_ Sharp dialogue. Crisp photography. Brilliant performances. Billy Wilder directing an Agatha Christie play. The recipe for absolute perfection. They don't make 'em like this anymore.

I might be asking for trouble here, but did Charles Laughton ever actually make a bad film? He leads this one as the brilliant but curmudgeonly barrister "Sir Wildred Robarts" with oodles of charisma and style.
