A mother stork is shot down from a chimney. A postnatal woman nearly jumps off a balcony. A girl contracts HIV from an adulterous partner. A woman applies make-up to two kittens. A mother looks for magic in the lunar calendar. These events are commonplace for this seemingly normal family, revealing the fine line they live between fragility and absurdity. In the meantime, their country Bulgaria is shaken up by anti-gender and anti-equality protests with an undercurrent of violence. These women are united by a shared trauma, but now they are ready to confront their father’s troubling past.

This movie is like Michael Bay's casino: women never win, the odds are stacked against them, and it doesn't give women any credit. If you scratch the surface of this movie about three sisters and their daughters, you'll see it's really about the condition of women in Bulgaria and probably the world in general. But then, if you dig a little deeper, you'll find the film actually kind of supports this negative attitude by portraying its protagonists as hysterical, shrieking banshees who disintegrate into tears the moment they face adversity. With so many affirming portrayals of women (Happening, Nomadland, 2019's Algerian film Adam...), this one will look best at the bottom of your watch pile.
