Proof that what works as a book does not necessarily translate well to the screen. The gimmick of sparse dialogue gets old quickly and the lack of anything cinematic until the third act is unforgivable. I can see what this film wanted to be, but this is a far cry from that.

I disagree with the previous comment. I think the story is unique (I did not read the book) and beautifully told. I was extremely invested throughout.

To be honest, other than the third and final act everything in this movie is overcooked. overly long, overly slow, a lot of terrible lines along with loads of overacting, and perhaps the worst part of all the overdone, despite the nice visuals and sounds that were put together, the 1927 timeline just failed to connect with the Ben storyline.

Consider me wonderstruck! While there are some lulls within the story - it goes on a little too long - it is still a cinematic marvel. Todd Hayne always has an eye for detail, and he delicately captures New York life in both the 20's and 70's as our two leads scour the city decades apart. The kids are great, Julianne Moore is brilliant (as always), and the film hits all the right notes musically. It's not quite a masterpiece, but despite some of the negative reviews on here, it's a worthwhile watch for the patient viewer.
