Watchable, but not a good start, it show be concentrate in characters individual stories and built up to the creation of the school, instead they already start the movie with a plot already in the middle.

Hard to believe this was released 17 years ago. Part 1-2 and Days of Future Past are the best ones. Otherwise the movie franchise a mess. Not bad movies but X-3 messed things up. Days of the Future Past attempted to fix that but made things more confusing.

Whilst short of some of the more explosive set pieces we are used to from recent superhero films (not you terrible 2015 Fantastic Four), this is still a triumphant beginning to the X-universe and is perhaps the film responsible for the continuing success of the genre (not you 2005 Fantastic Four).

A respectable treatment of the comic and a welcome antidote to the Batman movies of the previous decade (dark and wonderful; bright and awful).

In the category of understated superhero movies, the winner is..."X-Men". "X-Men" is another case where the villains are more interesting than the heroes. Magneto and Mystique are the greatest things going in "X-Men". They have much more defined personalities that any in the do-gooder X-Men crew do (nod to Dr. Seuss). In fact, Wolverine is far more interesting before he starts working with Prof. Xavier. He's edgier and more dangerous.

The plot centers on discrimination and bigotry and less on superheroes slugging it out. And that's fine because I think it's safe to say movies like "Transformers 2" and "Terminator: Salvation" tell us everything we need to know about style over substance.

The building tension between Xavier and Magneto is what sells this. It's a neat thing to see them playing a game of chess as they discuss the fate of the world which is largely in their own hands.

Watched this for WHM. Such a bore. It starts off okay before turning into every other shitty CGI fest subpar superhero movie out there. Kind of worth it to see Frasier as a superhero and to laugh at Hugh Jackman wig. Some scenes it looks like someone bumped it up from the back but no one told him. I hope it's a wig, I mean if that's a real do then the stylist should get the axe. I laughed out loud a few times. Side note, I couldn't stop trying to figure out if miles was in lost when this came out or if this got him lost. Also sopranos, that was his big break right? See, can't help but not think about this movie.

Upon rewatch you really realise how bad this movie actually is. The dialogue is cheesy it stunk. The vfx was almost there but no where near. The action and choreography was like watching 'strictly come dancing' on hallucnigentics.
But at one point, I loved this movie and it definitely wasn't everything I named that stayed with me, I guess the movie being born in the 90s gives itself a face-lift.

Yes, some of the dialogues are wierd, but it a nostalgic movie. I love it because it was the first superhero movie I ever liked and that hooked me to X-men forever.

Setting aside some truly awful puns and one-liners, this does a great job of introducing the world of the X-Men, setting up the various character dynamics that will continue to play out in the series, suggesting mysteries and threads for future films all in the space of 90 minutes. The film works extremely well primarily because of Hugh Jackman as he essentially plays the audience surrogate through the film and it is no surprise that he went on to be the primary focus of so many future X-Men films. The minor villains are largely disappointing, but the rest of the cast is great and give the film some much needed weight and gravitas, especially with the likes of Stewart and McKellen. It helps that the film also keeps the focus on the developing paternal relationship between Jackman and Paquin as the larger threat is poorly developed and it is they the audience care more about.

Energetic, surprisingly loyal action / adventure with some brilliant casting choices and a tight, cohesive visual style. Patrick Stewart and Ian McKellen are brilliant choices as Xavier and Magneto, dueling civil rights figureheads on opposite sides of the moral spectrum, but don't get nearly enough scenes together. Of course, Hugh Jackman absolutely defines the role of Wolverine, playing a very clearly defined, potentially cheesy character and pulling it off with vigor.

The film's not entirely confident in itself, evidenced by a few hokey plot devices and a handful of godawful lines of comic relief (basically anything that comes out of Halle Berry's mouth), but considering its age and status as the make-or-break point for comic book properties (spoiler: they made the cut) I can overlook a few missteps. Light fun with the kernel of a deeper message nestled beneath several layers of black leather, titanium veneer and bright, colorful effects.

This held up better than I expected. Maybe it's some nostalgia but I still think this is entertaining. I love all the character and their interactions but the story isn't the best and the special effects are dated.

Predictable story, boring action sequences, absolutely no character development, visually uninteresting. This isn't like Batman where it's so bad it's good, it's just... bland.

At 14 years old I remember renting this on pay per view late one night. As a fan of the 90s cartoon and arcade game I was hyped! And it lived up to it! The casting of the main team was spot on. Couldn't have hoped for better. It still stands up for me all these years later. It's not perfect, some allowances and stretches made to get it on screen but it works. The sequel is even better ofc but what a start and what an opening scene!
