I guess a Twitter thread doesn’t really translate well to film.

Absolutely creative, perfectly told in the form of a story that is almost fantasy (the use of mirrors). Bravo represents a story from Twitter with irony (Stefani's version) and with visual and sound ideas (the use of colors) that seem to have no end. An entertaining but at the same time profound reflection on social networks and their influence. A film in which small details are discovered in each scene. emoji heart.

A Twitter thread put to film, loosely true to the real story. ***Zola*** is a cautionary tale on fast-made friends, a reminder of what social media can do and a hard look at the sex work industry. It's trashy, exploitative, erotic (downright porn in some parts) and does a good job at displaying how trapped they are in the industry. Digged the mystery going in sinse I had no idea what this was about. The toilet scene at the beginning was quite clever. Very stylish and great cinematography. The comedy was very welcome, I laughed a lot. The performances are what make it so enjoyable for me. I wasn't really aware of the casting past Riley Keough going into the movie and I laughed so hard when I saw cousin Greg (*Succession*). Everyone did great (Keough, Paige, Domingo and Braun). It could have been shorter, I got a bit bored in some parts but thank god for the performances and comedy. It was all going so good (a 7/10) until it just kinda ends... no resolution whatsoever. Where's the rest of it??

Kind of disturbing that this was all a twitter thread, kind of dystopian. Zola was a different approach to filmmaking and scriptwriting that I was curious to check out but the end-result was only so-so. The visuals are often stunning and the nods to the original platforms the stories were posted on were funny, but the narrative just wasn’t strong enough to hold a whole feature film.

From my perspective, “Zola” almost felt like a horror movie; I can’t believe such lifestyles exist in our world (and I am not talking about pimps and escorts). More unsettling than the characters we met during Frank’s joyride in “Blue Velvet”. The plot is based on a supposedly real story posted in a Twitter thread, and even though it falls apart towards the end, is always put into action with interesting directorial choices. I also liked that they added smartphone graphics and notification chimes without getting overwhelming.

Janicza Bravo did a great job with this thematic cousin to Spring Breakers. A24 and company held on to this project through the pandemic and I think it was a good choice, I saw this in theaters and was a great time.
Great score, great direction, Riley Keough plays a phenomenal dirtbag, Taylour Paige tells so much through her eye-rolling alone!

Not enough to care about in the film. The cinematography was better than this story deserved.

Most entertaining movie of 2021, for me. I heard of the viral Twitter thread but I never bothered to read it. So the story had me on the edge of my seat.
The cinematography is fantastic. I'm glad they didn't go with the neon, squeaky clean digital look that is so trendy in modern films.

Heavily hyped movie isn't all that in reality. A pity because the cast is great.

Different, but I actually liked it.

'Zola' takes a few scenes to get into it and to get used to the stylistic choices, namely with the editing and dialogue, though by the end I did in fact enjoy this film. It's a bonkers story, one that I semi heard about when it became known that a film was going to be made based on a thread of tweets.

It's probably much better than it was any right to be in truth, all things considered, but the filmmakers made it work and deserve credit for that - and also for the astutely chosen short run time, too.

The acting talent bring noteworthy performances, with particularly Taylour Paige and also Riley Keough putting in the work. Colman Domingo is also good - I already like that guy from TV's 'Fear the Walking Dead', so it's always a pleasure to see him act elsewhere.

Recommended.

Riley Keough looked and sounded like Bhad Bhabie. All she needed was to say "cash me outside, how bout dat" to complete the role. This movie was trash.:wastebasket::sleeping:

Considering the story is based off a Twitter thread I’d say it’s pretty good. Yes it’s trashy and exploits women but this is the strory. Just because you dont like it or agree with it doesnt mean it isn’t happening. So enough with the bad reviews regarding exploitation and stereotyping…. If you don’t think you’ll like it or get offended by it…. Don’t watch it and then leave a shitty review. Riley Keough really can act…. I’ve seen her in more than one movie and she certainly doesn’t receive the props she’s due. I wouldn’t call this a comedy but more into a window of a life most of us dont lead…. A great watch.
