A good series that started out a bit unsure if it was comedy or drama but had me convinced it was an excellent balance of both by the end. Not sure why there are only 6 episodes listed here, there are 7 total.
The series ended well and it felt (to me) like there was little unresolved. Like most well-written shows it could have unravelled a few loose threads in a new season, but the major plot lines had all been tied off.
The pilot of BABYLON is drenched in razor sharp, rapid fire satire, but the Danny Boyle series, itself, settled into a strange interplay of drama and poke-the-beast derision of the political environment of the Metro police force. My favourites: James Nesbitt, Brit Marling, Nicola Walker give the great performances we would expect from them but all the cast of this series give solid performances. The writing is surgical but it keeps the audience on their back foot, as the situations and attitudes of the characters are surreal and often crass, leaving us wondering if it is meant to be taken seriously.
However, the unfortunate end of the series (whether by cancellation or design) leaves the audience in the lurch, with unresolved plot lines.
If the series was meant to have an additional season beyond the 7 episodes, I give the production an 8 (great) out of 10. If the series was meant to end as broadcasted, I give it a 5 (unresolved) out of 10. [Sardonic Drama]
