As someone who knows this version of Beauty and the Beast upside down and backwards, I have loved this film since its release and call it my favorite film of all time. My heart is open to adaptations and new character portrayals, which I think is sometimes rare for something you love so much. I wasn’t sure about this casting, but ended up loving it more than I imagined. Gaston vocals were so strong and amazing.
Glad they included Evermore for Groban, as the Beast doesn’t have more than a few singing lines in Something There
. I love Her’s music and think she’s wonderfully talented but at times felt like her Belle was lacking as the main character. Now I can’t say this was because of her specifically or how they directed her, but she didn’t fully bloom until she
arrived as HERself, with the rose guitar and yellow tinted glasses
. That was so cool. The Easter egg appearances during Belle were also nice. I’ve always loved Shania and am aware that she lost her singing voice for a while there, so it was a treat to see her rendition of Beauty and the Beast with Menken beside her. There is nothing like his compositions for this film for me. The Rose choreography, as well as the choreography during Be Our Guest was really intricate and fun to watch and made me think of the stage version, no cgi! The film did have some minor parts chopped out, probably to fit air time, but it was well put together for television and I enjoyed it more than the prior Disney ones. I also liked the little VA throwback clips, drawn animated scenes and other facts and features that have made this film so special as well as how it has been kept alive 30 years later. I can’t name everyone involved but they all did a good job and the costumes (Beast/wolves, etc) were also different and interesting to see.
