Black Books centres around the foul tempered and wildly eccentric bookshop owner Bernard Black. Bernard’s devotion to the twin pleasures of drunkenness and wilful antagonism deepens and enriches both his life and that of Manny, his assistant. Bearded, sweet and good, Manny is everything that Bernard isn’t and is punished by Bernard relentlessly just for the crime of existing. They depend on each other for meaning as Fran, their oldest friend, depends on them for distraction. Black Books is a haven of books, wine and conversation, the only threat to the group’s peace and prosperity is their own limitless stupidity.

This is one of my favorite sitcoms of all time. I currently venturing on my fourth or fifth complete watch through. It manages to be both completely absurd and relatable. It is a remarkably charming show that everyone should have the pleasure of sampling.

After finishing deadwood season 1, I moved to season 1 of black books. I watch series season by season. I did not read anything about series. Just looked at the year and how many seasons it had and genre and decided to watch :) I will edit this after finishing all seasons. I wrote same review to also season 1. Edit after watching one episode: I did not know it was sitcom. Too little characters. Narrow places. Canned laughter is disturbing but it had funny scenes.
