The topic of fighting crime in the future through data collection and the use of AI promises an exciting narrative, but unfortunately the series fails to fully exploit this potential. Despite the interesting approach, the story never really gets going, which is mainly due to the structure of Class of '09 (2023).

One major problem is the constant jumping between three different time levels. While the storyline in the past deals with the training of the characters in 2009 and offers a logical and coherent concept, the storyline in the future is particularly convincing thanks to the successful visual realization of an advanced world in the near future, it is above all the storyline in the present that damages the entire series with major weaknesses. The present-day plot is overloaded as a link between the past and the future, in which new conflicts arise, characters have to be told further and plot elements are created on which the future levels are then supposed to build. This narrative technique prevents the story from developing sufficiently in the individual time levels. As a result, the viewer is often left with incomplete and fragmented storylines, which detracts from the overall experience.

Brian Tyree Henry is convincing in the role of Tayo Michaels, a character with clear motivation who is given a good foundation in the past level, so that the character's actions in the future are always based on a comprehensible motive. On the other hand, Kate Mara's performance falls well short of expectations and she is unable to carry the plot convincingly.

What Class of '09 (2023) then tells does not come across as new and innovative, but rather as a blend of well-known genre representatives such as Person of Interest (2011-2016), Minority Report (2002) or 1984. The series uses the familiar narrative threads of its predecessors, gives them the AI stamp of approval, but has no new approach itself and the topic is not really new either: there is already various software that deals with the prediction of crimes based on data analysis. On the other hand, the successful visualization of the future deserves a positive mention. The depiction of technological developments and their impact on society is convincing.

Overall, Class of '09 (2023) falls short of expectations despite its promising subject matter and visual realization. A clearer structure and a stronger focus on individual storylines would have been urgently needed.

Die Gegenwartshandlung ist als Bindeglied zwischen Vergangenheit und Zukunft überfrachtet, in der sowohl neue Konflikte entstehen, Figuren weiter erzählt werden müssen und Handlungselemente entstehen, auf denen dann die Zukunftsebenen aufbauen sollen. Diese Erzähltechnik verhindert, dass sich die Geschichte in den einzelnen Zeitebenen ausreichend entwickeln kann. Dadurch bleibt der Zuschauer oft mit unvollständigen und fragmentierten Handlungssträngen zurück, was das Gesamterlebnis beeinträchtigt.

Brian Tyree Henry überzeugt in der Rolle des Tayo Michaels, einer Figur mit klarer Motivation, die in der Vergangenheitsebene eine gute Grundlage erhält, so dass die Handlungen der Figur in der Zukunft immer aus einem nachvollziehbaren Motiv heraus geschehen. Was Class of '09 (2023) dann erzählt, wirkt nicht neu und innovativ, sondern wie ein Verschnitt aus bekannten Genrevertretern wie Person of Interest (2011-2016), Minority Report (2002) oder 1984. Die Serie nutzt die bekannten Erzählstränge ihrer Vorgänger, versieht sie mit dem KI-Stempel, hat aber selbst keinen neuen Ansatz und auch das Thema ist nicht wirklich neu: Schon heute gibt es diverse Software, die sich mit der Vorhersage von Verbrechen aufgrund von Datenanalysen beschäftigt. Positiv hervorzuheben ist hingegen die gelungene Visualisierung der Zukunft. Die Darstellung der technologischen Entwicklungen und deren Auswirkungen auf die Gesellschaft überzeugen.

Insgesamt bleibt Class of '09 (2023) trotz des vielversprechenden Themas und der visuellen Umsetzung hinter den Erwartungen zurück. Eine klarere Struktur und eine stärkere Fokussierung auf einzelne Handlungsstränge wären dringend notwendig gewesen.

The FX series Class Of '09 smartly layers the past, present, and future in telling this story. Introducing viewers to only two-time frames in the first five minutes made everything that happened in these first two episodes easier to absorb. Kate Mara's performance as Poet is so good that you are (easily) pulled into the third time frame (Present 2023) without it feeling disruptive.

You could argue that this story could have been just as good without the time jump. But it feels more attractive told this way and complements the dystopian part of the story set in 2034.

The showrunners, writers, and actors did a great job showing the good in 2009 and the ugly in 2034 but offered only a glimpse of the bad that's about to happen with a great cliffhanger at the end of episode two. This direction made it thrilling and fun to watch.

Structuring a series like this is difficult and often loses focus with all the back and forth, but this new limited series from FX may be the exception. I look forward to seeing how this story plays out.

Story summarized on paper probably looks good, and if they have just keeped focus of the show on main core of the story it would be above average.

But unfortunately they figured that there could be two stories to tell. One about dangers of considering everyone a criminal and dangers of AI decisioning (at least something in those lines). The other story is about woman in danger, black people in danger and other woke stuff. I can't understand why take something that could be good and ruined it with wokenes.
Didn't filmmakers learned until now that we don't want movies and shows to show political ideologies down our throats? I personally am fead up with wokeness and I'm just stop watching in the middle of the show if that's the case. And it was the case with this one.
