This show starts strong and picks up steam every episode and by the end of Season 2 it's a 10/10 show.

The whole series takes place inside 2 rooms and the hall outside.
The stories and acting are very good.
Big-time stars are "guest criminals" throughout the 2 seasons.

My favourite episode was 2x3 - Danielle. I was 100% behind her.. until I wasn't. Superb.

This is a novel approach to a Crime Drama, more theatre than TV and more concise than reality TV. There is just an interview room, a suspect and a team of people probing for answers. This was a tricky, risky bet for a series because it is so sparse of production elements. But is it really a gamble when you have but clever writing and incredible casting? I was WOWed by the skill of the guest performers as we watched them navigate the twists and turns of the storytelling. I’m totally sold on the potential for this new way of telling crime drama and will not only be watching subsequent seasons of the UK version but CRIMINAL GERMANY, CRIMINAL SPAIN and CRIMINAL FRANCE. I can only imagine how the culture, writing and star performers of each of those countries will flavour this unique storytelling. I give this series an 8 (talented inventiveness) out of 10. This show is honestly so interesting to watch. The stories are not different from what you would come across in any other crime show but the difference here is that you feel like you are in the interrogation room with the detectives and the potential suspect. They manage to create a very intense atmosphere within a room without using anything else that good storytelling and the talent of the actors. A surprisingly good show.

Overall, I think this show would’ve been better had the interrogations been part of a larger story. I understand the purpose of the singular view of the interrogation room, but it’s difficult to engage for 3 episodes when the scene doesn’t change. Despite all this, David Tenant is amazing as usual, the girl who played Stacey in the second episode was great too, and there are some tense scenes with the build up to [spoiler] confession in episode 3 being particularly really well written. Fantastic show! Ingenious use of one location in studio with stellar acting from guest stars and a solid cast. Easily warrants another instalment of episodes if the ingenuity in the writing can be maintained along with marquees level guest stars. It s a terrific vehicle for actors, writers and production to all flex their creative muscles. Highly recommend.

Just within the walls of the interrogation room, we see a game of cat and mouse unfold. In every episode, they show us a different case, a different interview. Through the 40 mins of the episode, we, along with the detectives, go through the details of the case multiple times to find out the truth.

It is a phenomenal concept on paper. With amazing actors and writing each episode it keeps you glued to your seat. you want to know as much as the detectives, what must have happened in each instance.

After the novelty of the format wears off, I realised I may not be able to continue for many seasons of it. The breadth of the crimes/investigations is wide, but the procedure becomes formulaic. Probably the creators of the show had an idea of this, and they introduced a few running themes across the season, but naturally, the format does not allow them to explore those themes in detail.

Since each episode is independent, I would recommend this for a discreet watch. Continue with what you are watching and on the side, when you want to take a break from it, watch an episode of Criminal UK
