Good show. The soundtracks are great.

the idea of taking something out of the pedestal in which it was put and bring it to the plan of the ordinary is amazing. this show does it with emily dickinson's biography and character perfectly. it is the teen drama/comedy it intends to be, and it has a very good balance between deeper emotions, militancy, poetry and jokes. whiz khalifa as death? john mulaney as a dick thoreau? halee steinfeld as a petulant teen emily dickinson? we have it all! i like the "anacronysms" in it as well: the vernacular, how they express their feelings, how women are daring and are open about having political opinions etc. in a period drama i'm not sure we would have that, and i think we'd lost the goal of bringing this 1800's set drama for today's spirit, which is the greatest in this show

The target audience for this show is definitely in the female teenager realm. That alone probably turned off a whole lot of people, more profuse watchers of television. There were a decent amount of "funny" moments, and certainly a lot of goofy moments. I didn't care too much about them. But you can tell that they're written for a teenage audience. And then there are the moments that attempt to put a focus on the issues of that time period, and failing miserably. Goofy and serious do not go together, and never should. This is supposed to be within the comedy genre. Either stay true to that or don't put so much emphasize on it and then try to slip serious moments in. But, hey. At least the cinematography is nice. And Emily and Sue will appeal to many and is probably even the reason most people watched it. I'm just not within that particular group. I enjoyed it but not extremely. But I didn't hate it, by any means. I'm just not apart of what is clearly the target audience, so I hope those who are and absolutely adore it can understand that.

[Initial Impression]. I wanted to like this initial offering of Apple TV+ (Hailee Steinfeld, the backstory of a great of 19th century literature) but it was a huge disappointment. It is written for teens and pre-teens, right down to it's vernacular. It is crude and foul mouthed. There was nothing winsome about it. Emily Dickinson is depicted as petulant, crass and spoiled and there is no semblance to Americana 1840s. I have no idea what value this production was meant to have. This initial impression will go no further for I will not continue watching this series. What a waste! I give this series a 4 (bad) out of 10. [Biographical? Drama]

BORING and ridiculous , don't waste your time

I'm glad to watch this, but I can't quite decide how I feel about the series. For me, the tone isn't consistent enough. The show is similar to 'The Great' in that it's a dramedy which mashes modern ways and speech with a period piece loosely inspired by real events. However, the level of modern speech swings wildly from scene to scene, sometimes being full-on millennial slang and Euphoria-like parties. Other times, I feel I'm genuinely in the 19th century. I don't think I'd ever rewatch this series, but I've enjoyed it once through. The music is also excellent.

Dickinson has good bones and could have become something interesting. The contemporary overlay brings the content to life—nevertheless, the show isn't confident enough in its premise and resorts to weird hackneyed tropes. In season one, Dickinson sets the palette of a Louisa May Alcott novel, even setting up a fictionalized meeting wherein Alcott becomes inspired to write Little Women based on the Dickinson family :rolling_eyes:. Of course, since the Dickinsons have been reduced to the Alcotts, Louisa May must be transformed into something else–like a George Sand (Amantine Aurore Dupin) styled character. Sue is just a muddle, which is tragic. Season two turns into a bodice ripper, which is ridiculous.

This is a ripoff of Another Period, but with a better budget, better actors, and worse writing. This show is aimed at middle school girls, but far too much of it would go over a tween's head. I wanted to like it for several reasons, but the show falls short.

A good show brought down by [spoiler] the dissapointing storyline of them attempting to make Ben Newton a love interest for unnecessary drama sake, despite the fact that historically he was a purely platonic friend to Dickinson [/spoiler]
They should have focused more on the interesting parts of the storyline like Dickinsons relationship with her father and her relationship with Sue

I don't think there is any other tv show similar to _Dickinson_.
It's funny. It's very, very weird. And I just love it.
Sure, there are less interesting plots and some characters just irritated me sometimes, but still I think this show is something else
- something extraordinary. It's been a great journey and i'm sad that it's coming to an end.

I enjoyed this show quite a bit though I would find myself looking away when some of the less interesting plotlines came into play. What I think it does well is using the setting to show us just how much progress we've made and at the same time also how little progress we've made since Dickinson's day. We're still struggling against racism and sexism today. I find it more than believable that even great poets could have been temperamental brats. I really like Hailee Steinfeld's portrayal of a spoilt young woman who is too brilliant and different for her own good. Even when I'm mad at Emily for some of her choices, I can't hate her.

I may not be the targeted audience for Dickinson, but this show is superb. Great acting and directing, perfect cast, great little stories and mostly (mostly!:wink:) historically correct... I love it!

This is some of the best alt-history you will ever watch.
