Characters seem to consist mainly of six characters and their dragons making the universe seem very small. Story doesn't seem that important for the overall movie universe either since it takes place between first and second films and there is not many surprises that the show can give us except some new dragon designs. So far only seen the first two seasons with the kids.

I like to split the franchise into two categories: titles with Craig Ferguson on voice acting, and those without. The latter category which is essentially this series, takes a serious quality hit and carries over none of what made the movies great, and more specifically great for adult viewers.

Instead, it musters every Saturday morning cartoon trope known to man to advance an unimaginative, incoherent plotline after another. Everything is dumbed down. The characters are one dimensional and at odds with their movie portrayal; Hiccup loses his sass and regularly makes tactical blunders, Astrid is a robot, and the rest of the crew act like lunatics. Tuffnut gets an overwhelming amount of screen time, where he seems to serve as a medium for a would-be comedian to dump his half-baked lines through.

Basically, leave this for the kids and forget that it has anything to do with the HtTYD continuum. If you want more of that, watch the "Legends" shorts and How to Train Your Dragon: Homecoming.

Each of those packs more heart and laughs in 20 minutes than the whole 8 seasons of this.

@Keldian Oh wow, how delusional can someone get? I watched all the movies and one thing that I have always noticed is how every character in them except for, hiccups and toothless have no personality or flair to them, they all talk and act almost exactly the same way. So the whole "At odds with their movie counterpart" is straight up, a lie, how can they have a different personality if they never had one to begin with At least in the show they have a semblance of sentience, and we get to learn about them and their interest/hobbies., etc. instead of just being love interest, idiot 1 & 2, tough idiot and fat nerd that is despite being the know-it-all dragon expert of the team he seldom ever said/does anything useful in the 3 movies he's been in so in short this series is decent and fun that sometimes has great moments in it, and it expands the world in ways that httyd 2&3 never did also it lead to in my opinion to what might be the best thing this series had race to the edge so all in all if I were to rate the movies/series it would be something like

Httyd 1: 7/10 is a good fun movie, and if I was surfing Netflix or TV channels(I know what a fossil) for something to watch, I would probably rewatch it because it is just fun to watch.

Httyd2: 5/10 at best (6 if I am feeling generous). It is just forgettable. It didn't have the awe factor and soul of the first one, and it feels disconnected from it and the side characters are even more shafted in this one, and they managed to make the world feel smaller and empty...etc

Httyd 3: 3/10 this MOVIE. MY GOD, WHAT AN ATROCIOUS ABOMINATION HOW CAN SOMEONE? I can't remember anything about this movie. I watched it 3 times and all I can remember is what a pathetic villain it has now. The httyd movies were never really known for their villains, but at least Drago was intimidating even with the goofy war cry and accomplished something at the very least. grimmel, on the other hand, has nothing. He's not intimidating and, despite how the movie tries to paint him as this chess master with unmatched intellect and wit, he's never shown doing anything remotely intelligent, and he only ever gets the upper hand over the heroes by cheer luck or by the other intellectual self-proclaimed strategist, hiccup doing something stupid for no apparent reason other than in the name of plot advancement not to mention the dude is just a knock off of a villain from the show that actually is smart and competent.

Httyd Rob/Dob/Dragons: 6,5/10 is an overall fun, good adventure that gives much needed world building and character development to the first movie's world and cast.

Httyd RTTE: 8/10 is an overall improvement over the aforementioned show with more world building and character growth.

Tldr: watch the show. While it is far from being a perfect show, it is still a good and fun adventure that expands the world of httyd and gives its characters much needed characterization and it, in my humble opinion, is superior to the sequels entirely, to the point that my, head cannon, pretty much forgoes the sequels entirely and, instead it goes something like this:

Httyd1>Dragons>Race to the edge.

This is a fun little show that helps expand the How to Train Your Dragon Universe. I don't think it's a must watch for fans by any means, but if you're obsessed with the movies like I am these make a good companion. I do think it's a bit disappointing that this show could have been more but wasn't, the animation isn't all that good, and the story is nothing special, but I still think it's passable.
