The effects are really bad and cheap but it is so faithful to the book they don't matter at all.

Yes, the effects are not up to par to current standards. It's close to the SciFi-standard we had around the 2000s, so it's not too bad if you don't expect too much (a bit like watching SD on HD TVs ... if the content is good, the resolution doesn't matter...). Anyways, Dune is a grown-up SciFi, where strategy and long term consequences are more important than "let's f-ing blow up this f-ing enemy spaceship right f-ing now!!!!". A lot different from what we've seen from SciFi productions during the last couple years/decades.

It's also different from David Lynch's 1984 version (I probably shouldn't say David Lynch, as he pretty much distanced himself from the project ... but it's probably "the" name connected to the 1984 version). It's different in a good way, though: It's closer to the books and it gives actors a lot more freedom to embrace their characters. Some use it, some don't ... but overall it's enjoyable. If you feel like Lynch's version was a complete disaster towards the last half/third, you should give this a shot.

Compared to other SciFi franchises, Dune fans seem spread out (at least throughout Europe). Thus, if you don't happen to have a lot of contact with other Dune fans, I recommend to watch this just to see another perspective to the Duniverse.

Some things they did worse than Lynch and some things they did better, but a solid adaptation has yet to be made. Really would like to see someone get it done well.

This adaptation knocks the deeply flawed Lynch movie out of the park. That's mainly because it sticks to the book's narrative. It's a shame that the production values and effects don't match the script's ambition. Even given that it's now over 20 years old.

Disappointing. Not so much because of the cheap special effects, but because of the below average acting and mostly because of the terrible writing. If you make a movie or a tv series based on a book, you need to tell your own story and not just assume that the audience has read the book anyways. To avoid.

You should really focus on the story because the production itself is crap.

As for how the book compares to this I do not know. I tried reading it when I was very young and couldn´t grasp the story so I put it away. After the movie I never felt the urge to pick it up again. It goes deeper than the movie that´s for sure.
