I kind of wished this might be a Netflix show so it could get a wider audience, but i'll see how the season turns out. It's nothing but zany so far. Interesting style, semi-predictable plot from the second episode, and has elements of Invader Zim, Farscape, and a beautiful art style for the world building.

The Pilot is ... tedious. It's still fun, Mostly because they introduce a 'gag' moment where Gary is on the cusp of dying, and this primes you for a very different character moment in the show towards the end of the pilot, and you'll get the theme of the show from that point on, i.e.

it's a rollercoaster of drama and irritating moments. and occasionally action and fast moving scenes that remind me of Invader Zim, but also some of the action moments from Rick and Morty Season 3/4, but slightly faster-paced and more stylised. Still, it's quite good for animation to deliver on those surprises.

(When the bounty hunter turns up, the name is Avocato, not Avocado, though.)

But stick with it, the 2nd episode cuts down on the background and just jumps right into the first arc of the show, which will likely be where they pivot and explain the title in the main arc of the show, i.e. Redeeming Gary, by going on serially botched adventures, one at a time. Even if it cribs a little bit from the Marvel Guardians of the Galaxy a tad too much at times, it's more of a homage than theft at this point since Gary the main protagonist, is supposed to be bitterly unlikeable and profoundly stupid, and yet, all you can say after he's driving you insane is ... he means well.

I did like the more adult themes and blood which is unique in western animation, and the voice acting talent is superb. Some of the 3D roto work is impressive and the gags are well tuned and zany rather than telegraphed too much in advance.

Wow! Mind=blown. Seriously, was reading up a review on Ars regarding Disenchantment (ugh, don't watch btw), and I noticed somewhere in the comments a show named 'Final Space'. Huh, I thought, I wonder where I've seen that. Turns out, it had been waiting for me to see it in Netflix. I'd seen it as a suggestion and wanted to watch it later, but never managed to add it to my list.

Anyway, time is a bit past 1AM, I decide to give it a chance, as I was not feeling sleepy (Damn you sleep disorder!). Needless to say, I was immediately hooked. I don't want to spoil anything, just be prepared for an emotional rollercoaster, and a good one at that. Lost my chance to sleep because I watched the whole season in one sitting, ending in around 5:30 AM.

I've read people comparing it to Rick and Morty, but the only connection between them is their genre I'd say. Both are funny in their own ways, but Final Space is more plot driven than Rick and Morty which tends to have a very loose plot.

The plot is straight to the point, no bullshit. If you like Sci-Fi and Fantasy, do yourself a favor and just watch it. It's well worth it :)

I've been waiting for Final Space for quite some time. I loved the pilot on the creator's YouTube channel, and I knew it could be great. Overall, I think Final Space fulfilled expectations.

Season 1 was full of introductions, but in ten 22-minute episodes, they managed to tell a story worth telling _and_ make me feel for the characters. There were legitimately sad moments in this animated comedy, which isn't something that can always be said about these types of shows. Olan Rogers, the creator, did a fantastic job of teasing out emotions while still filling the show with the comedy he's known for.

The season did a decent job of balancing surface-level comedy with deeper, more thoughtful laughs, even if it did lean towards the surface a few too many times. It's forgivable, though.

The absolute highlight of this show is the characters. From Gary's fantastic personal growth to the development of Avocato and Quinn, the show shines in its people. Even characters that don't "grow" as much as are revealed like HUE, KVN, and Mooncake add a lot of emotion and emphasis to the show.

While the characters are great, the main antagonist seems to fall a little short. That's not to say Lord Commander is a bad character or even a bad villain. He's not, it's just that the rest of the characters set the bar high. He's seen as a real threat, which is an accomplishment, but he doesn't get enough screen time to get fully fleshed out, although that's probably alright.

This show really hits its stride around episode eight. The last three episodes of the season are my favorite, and the emotional buildup and release happen to be one of the best in an animated series.

The season also ended in a great way. The arc is wrapped up well, and if the show would never come back, I'd be satisfied. They also left just enough left to spur on curiosity and interest in a second season.

My average episode score ended at 8.4 for the season, but the way they fit together as a tidy arc gives this enough of a boost to get to 9. I'm eagerly awaiting Season 2 and more from Rogers.
