In a way this is similar to shows like The Borgias or The Tudors albeit 40 years older. This is done like a stage play, which was typical for the BBC around the time, that kind of puts the viewer on the stage amidst the actors. I´m guessing it must have cost a fortune by 70s TV standards to produce this. It features an amazing cast of actors, a lot of them would become well knows stars of TV and cinema.

A perfectly adequate political chamber drama, but its adherence to the BBC model of bone-dry theatre impersonation makes you wonder why it needed to exist. All the more tragic then that one of the supreme masters of cinema, Josef von Sternberg, never finished his planned film adaptation of Graves' novels. Sternberg's decadence and psychological grotesquerie would have been a far better match for the source material than the dull, anti-art sensibilities of crusty BBC writers and directors.
