You could call this a real cyberpunk anime. A pretty abstract and philosophical story about identity and who we really are. It leaves the viewer questioning about more than just the series itself. Juicy detail: It is rumoured to be one of the series that had an influence on The Wachowski brothers for The Matrix story. However I don't know if this is ever confirmed or true, and it probably was a minor one compared to Ghost In The Shell. After all it was aired only 1 year before the release of The first Matrix movie. It is not for everyone, but if you have an open mind and like more gloomy and philosophical stories, it is definitaly worth it.

i really, really try to watch this anime, but i can't understand what's happening and this show can't keep me watching it. probably, the anime like this type not for me.

Watched this on a hot summer holiday at my cousins when I was 15. Was a fever dream I won't forget... or maybe I will... not quite sure what was happening, but I loved the song used in the credits.

Lain was quite an experience... I had already seen subjective and contemplative media, but Lain is more than that. Until the halfway point of the anime, everything is very confusing, and the other part of the anime, heading towards the end, becomes even more confusing, but it starts to explain itsel More
