At the beginning of the Edo Era, when people enjoyed a time of peace, Lord Tokugawa Tadanaga holds a fighting tournament. In the past, matches were fought with wooden swords. This time, real swords will be used. One-armed Fujiki Gennosuke and blind Irako Seigen will fight each other in this match. Both are disciples of Iwamoto Kogan, who is known as Japan's greatest swordsman. Each of them are determined to prove himself the successor of Iwamoto's school. However, there can only be one champion. So begins a story of intertwining fates, conflict, and strange destinies.

Don't bother with this one... The story isn't that special and the ending doesn't end the story, it just raises more questions.

This is hardcore. It's quite an interesting and unique Samurai story but may not be for everyone. Showcases Samurai as largely unsympathetic and violent people instead of the honourable and chivalrous heroes we are used to seeing in media. It starts slow but builds up to an intense, gripping story. The direction is very idiosyncratic, which while successful in imbuing the series with an oppressive atmosphere might at the same time alienate quite a few viewers.

The best anime I have ever watched. Nothing has ever come as close as this one, walking on the borderline of historical/realistic prespective accuracy - Exaggeration - Character richness and evolution - Blunt graphic scenes and a true tragic story faithfully reminiscent of ancient greek tragedies.
