Dick Cavett alone is great, no matter the guest. In fact when he was on air certain people would only go on his show like Brando, Hendrix, and Orson Welles. Even Kat Hepburn who was notoriously private did a show they taped without an audience. I love Cavett and have since my first experience. This episode is by far the best and I've searched far and wide to build a pretty decent cavett collection over the years. This episode features Bogdonavich as a baby fresh off "Last Picture Show", Altman, A hilarious yet intelligent Mel Brooks, and the top it all off Frank Capra. The foursome along with Cavett discussed what I considered the most transcendent decade of films/directors and Cavett asked if Hollywood was dead. It made me laugh. Ask that question today, the "Hollywood" he was referencing has not only died about ten years ago it's been taken over by the money people the products that come out may satisfy some, but many have forgotten what films are and why we loved them. What passes for movies these days is mediocre at best. Not a single guest on this episode and the many others of Cavett even knew what mediocre was. His show is a late night show with intelligence but still skillfully network friendly. Oh yeah I just remembered the lenons Yoko and John only would go on cavett too. Don't settle for the clips on YouTube find full episodes and hold onto them, an episode of cavett encapsulates all that we could be have been but gave it all away.
