IMHO The original series was superior. However saying that this was a good attempt at a reboot and enjoyable to watch. There were some nice nods to the original series ( including a brief play of the original theme tune at one moment). The handling of the Tripitaka question was interesting as well.

However if you get the chance definitely check out the original https://trakt.tv/shows/monkey as its fun to watch.

Also for more stories on the exploits of The Monkey King I recommend checking out "A Korean Odyssey" (https://trakt.tv/shows/a-korean-odyssey) which is a more modern remake.

Not really sure what this was about as I’ve never heard of this show from the past but let me tell you...it’s awesome. I can’t stop watching it. Who cares if it’s cheesy...I think that’s what makes this show so great. I really hope they make more seasons. I need to go find the original series somewhere & watch it.

@d0ndada I think the name the new legends is not in reference to another TV show but the base material, a 16th century Chinese novel called "Journey to the West".

@balmoth This TV show is directly inspired by the Japanese TV Show Monkey Magic. For example, character names Monkey and Tripitaka stem from the loose English translation used in the Japanese TV show. If it were meant to be more faithful to the original Chinese legend then it would use the more accurate names Sun Wukong and Tang Sanzang.

If you can look past the mediocre acting it's a fun watch. Just like The Magicians :)

@maglor Where do you think a lot of inspiration for Goku in Dragonball came from?

@maglor It certainly does. Dragonball's Goku is actually heavily inspired by Sun Wukong, a character from the Chinese novel "Journey to the west". Son Goku is in fact just the name they use in Japan when referring to Wukong. There are tons of other shows/manga/novels who are reinterpretation of the original novel.
