A show that only pseudo intellectuals can watch fully and still come out praising it. Calling it "perfect" or a "masterpiece" is disingenuous and quite honestly just a flat out lie. Don't get me wrong, I really like this show and its characters, but when it comes to taking a step back and actually looking at it through an objective lens I started to realise that the show is far from perfect. The purpose of this review is to give a fair and objective point of view, not a crowd pleasing dishonest point of view like so many others have clearly tried to present. A 5/10 doesn't mean that I didn't enjoy this show, it just means that from an objective point of view it is heavily flawed.

This show may be the granddaddy of modern cable dramas but it, like your granddaddy isn't close to as good as it use to be. This show is like your granddaddy in the way that it reflects on its past when it was on top, when there was no real competition and times were simpler. The show has aged extremely poorly and acting as if it invented the concept of a boundary breaking cable TV is again completely disingenuous.

The writers of this show have a clear disconnect of what actually makes television shows good. A TV show has to be entertaining and engaging, this show is neither of these things. The characters are completely unlikeable and Tony is a downright pathetic man-child. The plot isn't interesting or even slightly original. The technical aspects of the show are completely amateur, seriously I have not seen an episode that wasn't full of audio and video editing errors. The writing is also full of plot holes and oversights, in the last episode I watched a man shot and killed two people in a car and the pedestrians completely ignored the gunfire, recently I rewatched the first episode and Tony was a completely different person who actually understood his mental health. Also I keep seeing people saying "but there's a deeper meaning" and that is literally the weakest defence ever, the shit I took this morning has a deeper meaning than 90% of the episodes of this show. A character winking isn't genius, it doesn't make a show the smartest show on TV. The people reading this review probably won't realise but this review is actually genius because I have terrible grammar. I never felt like I was forcing my self to watch a TV show before, until I watched this.

Don't watch this show, watch an actual good show like: Breaking bad, Better call Saul, Lost, Mr Robot, Dexter, GOT, etc. etc. (I haven't really sat back and evaluated these shows yet, these are just shows I personally thought were enjoyable)

I'm late to this, I know, but at the time it came out I was in college and working multiple jobs to pay for it. It came out in that stretch of time that I was practically blind to current culture.

But now I'm watching it, and honestly it's like all those other Mafia movies and TV shows that come around every decade or so. They never really get old.

The Mafia allows for a few things, stress, tension which are both great for drama...and then brutal violence and humor, which also pair wonderfully together.

The only time you're going to miss is when you don't do it well, but The Sopranos actually did it incredibly well. It was amazingly fun, amazingly dramatic, and beautifully acted...so, it's going to entertain.

And, unlike the movies, the episodic nature of a TV show plays well with the mafia shtick, especially when paired with a premium channel like HBO that can do whatever they want.
