They've done the homework and this show is starting really good. Tiny (and less) details scattered and alluding to what's to come, for those who already read the books. Smooth cuts from present to past, and I like how they intertwined infinitesimally small and infinitely large scales, showing once more they got the point.

Now past half season and I have to admit the series is slow paced. I wonder what that creates for those that didn't read the book. To me, it's a necessary mean to prepare the pivoting revelation that's yet to come, and to understand all the motives behind every player in this grand scheme. I'm very positively surprised by the rendering of the virtual reality game, when I read the book I asked myself how difficult it could be rendered in an eventual adaptation, and I think they managed well to immerse and distance the viewer every time. We can feel some thing important is happening and yet wonder at the seeming insignificance of this virtual game.

Watching this series was honestly infuriating. The premise is fucking amazing, but its production is all over the place. Extremely slow placing, episodes without structure, corny moments where they shouldn't be, weird editing, terrible ADR and censorship. But even with all that, it still triumphs for me. From its story to the characters to the factions to the science and sci-fi elements; it's the kind of sci-fi that I like. I'm very excited for what's next. Maybe I'll read the books.

For those like me who didn't read the books and were waiting to see how the story continues, there is an animated series based on the second book: https://trakt.tv/shows/the-three-body-problem-2022-179590

Over stays it's welcome. The quality of the source material saves the series. Unlike what many believe, this show is not a one-to-one adaptation of the book, there are some things added, and some removed. Although, I don't think anything that was removed was required for the rest of the story. Ye Wenjie's relationship with her father, and the effect of his death on her subconscious was one thing that was omitted for the worse, IMO.

And being predominantly created for the mainland China audience, there is quite a bit of PRC-execptionalism, and well-executed censorship underlying most of the writing. I had expected that, and I suspect the Netflix adaptation to have a lot of west-exceptionalism underlying its writing. It's a departure from the underlying tones of humanity-over-nations I felt from reading the books.

Unfortunately, from what I hear the Netflix adaptation is far too compressed, where it comes and goes before you get a chance to sit down.

I just watched this out of curiosity since the Netflix series was announced. Many comments that compared the two have characterized the Chinese version as more faithful, but slow and boring, yet insightful in terms of science. While I haven't yet seen the western adaptation, I do agree with the reviews that I've read previously, this adaptation it extremely slow and boring. The flashbacks are sudden and disjointed, and this 30 episode show really drags on needlessly. Even though I have a keen interest in science fiction and storytelling, this tested my patience and was left unrewarded.

It remains to be seen if the Western adaptation is any better, but given the reviews so far I am inclined to believe the opposite; the western adaptation will probably be shallow, superficial and immediate (PS: proven right, Western NF adaption is ten times worse) - but that falls out of the scope of this review.

TLDR: Nothing impressive, extremely slow and mostly boring. Some scientific and historical background is welcome, but hardly compensates for the pacing. All in all, this is extremely forgettable, nothing stands out as original unless you consider boredom as such.

A lot better than the Oxford 5 (thinking of the friends theme song) Netflix version.

I've read the book series. This first season does a really good job adapting the first book. I was pleasantly surprised at how good the special effects are. And they did a great job with the casting, the actor Hewei Yu completely transforms into the cop Shi Qiang.
