How this has become a discussion about two very different shows, I can't possibly understand. (Seriously, TRUE BLOOD and THE VAMPIRE DIARIES? It's like comparing HOUSE, MD and GREY'S ANATOMY.)

I started watching this show when I was most definitely a part of the target audience, and despite my initial fear of this show being a TWILIGHT rip-off (despite the fact that the books had been written before, which yes, would make it a "Follow the leader"; mainly because Book!verse differs vastly from TV!verse), its flaws are entirely different.

THE VAMPIRE DIARIES has a protagonist-centered morality, that, when it comes down to it, isn't caused by Elena Gilbert's gentle or loveable personality (of which's existence, by now, only the Salvatores seem to be entirely certain), but the fact that she's got the special kind of boobs. Her magic hooha is infamous among fans of PNR and UF, the hypocrisy of the characters one of the most fandom-intern-critizised points of the entire show.

Despite that, we still watch it, and once you've come to the point where you hate a show with a passion, yet can't wait for the next episode, you do wonder why that is. (Or at least I do.) The heteronormativity, the lack of POCs, the annoying protagonist and love-triangle, the melodrama, the patheticly obvious loop-holes and inconsistencies. Even the beautiful and rather talented actors and actresses (and amazing music (and yes, to be fair, the few very well-written and often well-directed episodes) shouldn't be able to make up for it, right?

But in the end, the show is what the HOUSE OF NIGHT series is in the PNR bookworld. It might suck, it might be immature, sex-negative, and downright awful at times, but it's also compelling. I can't help but react to the insanities that ensue, and even though it probably isn't what the writers and creatores intended, my hatred for certain characters and the misery I feel everytime they mess an magnificent concept up beyond repair, are what keeps me coming back.

In other words, if you are looking for a well-written, sex-positive, 21st century TV-show whose writers you can trust, look somewhere else. If you want a guilty pleasure "Jesus, why do they all look so good, and wth, how is this his voice?"-experience, THE VAMPIRE DIARIES should definitely do. (Then again, shows like LOST GIRL, TEEN WOLF, and BUFFY THE VAMPIRE SLAYER are, at this point, easier to recommend with a clean conscience.)

(That isn't to say the show isn't enjoyable. Especially if you are less involved, are able to be entertained by shows despite their influence on particular people, or don't question the characters' and writers' decisions, it should be a show you might come to like.)

well structured review, just recommendation if you are using abbreviations (PNR, UF, POC) to rather use full words, as you are not using the terms often in the text and some readers will not understand.

@ douseks: Sorry, just saw your comment now. (Damn my inbox..) Hm, yeah, you're right! I've gotten so used to reviewing books on Goodreads etc. -where most people know what those terms mean- that unless I'm on Amazon, I keep forgetting to use the full terms. Thanks for the reminder! :)

@patriciabr I agree, TVD is just like a garbage movie that you can't hate, though I wouldn't say it is like a cult movie (cult movies are like for completely different reasons I think). TVD has what most The CW shows have. It follows its Recipe Drama with some supernatural stuff in it (or these days with super heroes in it). I mean, even I'm watching this even though I really find it to be generic (in some ways, like drama).<br /> In the end the show is just entertaining enough to keep you interested, but they don't try hard enough to create something original nor excellent.

This was the first TV show that I started watching. I was 14, obsessed with Twilight (don't judge) and wanted mooooore vampires. In the beginning it was good. I became older and decided to stay loyal to my first TV show and finish it, despite not liking it anymore. I was so glad when I heard season 8 was the last one. Why? Because it's the same thing over and over and over again. Killing some humans, oh oops, major characters die. Let's bring them back from the dead! Aaaaand they're dead again. Luckily we have another spell to bring them back! Seriously? I can't keep track of how many times some characters have died and were brought back!

And after
Elena became the sleeping beauty
, I thought the show would get better, since that was the most dreadful character. I was wrong. It got even worse.
Just like before, it was still all revolving around Elena. I mean come on, the chick isn't going to wake until that Bonnie dies so can you just go 5 minutes without mentioning her? Please?
It should have ended right there, with season 6. It appeared that even the original cast grew tired of this show as a lot of the original cast had themselves written out and were replaced by new, insignificant characters and with that, a new, insignificant plot. Says a lot about this show too... If even the actors are done with it, then you really know it became a bad show.

The vampire diaries? More like the boring diaries.

**MY THOUGHTS ON THE VAMPIRE DIARIES:**

_**-WARNING: Spoilers Below-**_

This show will always hold a very special place in my heart. It was literally the show that got me interested in Vampires, Witches and Werewolves. Every season of this was at least a 7/10 or higher. This will always be a show I'll go back to and rewatch and recommend to people.

I've watched this show roughly 3 times now and each time I watch it I have a new favourite character or I have a new least favourite character. I notice new little plot points or I realise there's connections that I never noticed before. That's exactly why this is a show I'll always return to, it's almost like a new experience every time.

When it comes to my favourite part of the show its definitely when The Originals were introduced. That was definitely peak Vampire Diaries. Nothing will ever beat the hype Niklaus had with his arrival and poor Jenna's death. Even writing this paragraph makes me want to rewatch that season.

When it comes to my least favourite season it'll have to be the final season. Even though it was great it just fell a little flat compared to the previous seasons. My main issue mainly fell with Bonnie's ending, Matt's irritating Character Arc and how Elena just rolled back into the show and got a great happy ending.

Let's talk favourite characters. This is something that changes every single time I watch this show but I ALWAYS manage to have a certain few characters that become number one. These are; Damon, Enzo, Niklaus, Elijah & Alaric. Nobody else can beat these characters, they all have phenomenal character development and storylines.

Now unfortunately when you have a favourite character you usually have a least favourite character... With me these were Elena, Matt & Vicky. The list is nowhere near as big as my favourite characters but that's a VERY good thing. These 3 characters I found so irritating, whiny and overall pointless. I felt like they all could have been taken out of the show and they wouldn't be missed (that was proven with Elena).

Overall this is an all-round masterpiece. It's got some of the best story telling I've witnessed in a Supernatural based TV Show and it always leaves me wanting more. I can't possibly express how much I love this show and the influence it had on me and my life, especially my early teens. I'd definitely recommend this show if you're a fan of Vampires, Witches or Werewolves. If you're not a fan of those, give it a go and I guarantee you'll end up being a fan of them then.

**Overall rating: 8/10**

Toss out everything you've learned about the traditional vampire. I scoffed and couldn't finish episode two. The overly loud terrible music soundtrack gave me a headache. The "evil" brother was the only thing that kept me watching episode two but I couldn't take the music anymore.
