In a time when sitcoms are becoming increasingly reliant on brain dead slapstick humor forced on audiences by a recurring laughter track, Veep brings something fresh and unique to the table. Based inside the beltway of Washington D.C.'s political circuit, this series employs a stellar cast and great writing. A valiant return to the stage for the ever charming Julia Louis-Dreyfus (Selina Meyer), but the situational part of this comedy is best built up by the quirkiness of her close group comprised of Matt Walsh (Mike McLintock), Tony Hale (Gary Walsh), Anna Chlumsky (Amy Brookheimer), Reid Scott (Dan Egan), and Sufe Bradshaw (Sue Wilson). Apart from the core group, surrounding the central character, Timothy Simons (Jonah Ryan), Gary Cole (Kent Davison), Kevin Dunn (Ben Cafferty), and Sam Richardson (Richard Splett) deliver an additional layer of well-timed comedic performances that leaves one rollicking in laughter during various moments. For those seeking a punch to the belly for a quick laugh, this show may not be appealing. For one, it is only funny when the situation of the protagonists are taken in perspective to the political climate. But for those actively following American politics or deeply invested in it, Veep provides a much needed goofy angle to a gloomy and, at times, morbidly nihilistic institution. The first two seasons take some time to build up characters and create moments of true laughter, but the later seasons magically pull the funny bunny out of the hat in every other scene. An enjoyable and engaging performance by a veteran cast and a truly well written comedy show.
