I loved this. I thought it was a near perfect documentary show, detailing the story of LGBTQ+ representation in America television, showing us a past of closeted performers and creators forced to create a persona to survive and keep their job and activists jamming themselves in the narrative and on the screen of millions of Americans to literally fight for their lives. But also showing us the present and a possibly bright future of great representation on screen, getting ready to include maybe finally Everyone. The interviews are spectaculars, showing us what it takes to create a place and a narrative for yourself and what Queer inclusion looks like. I was in tears more than a couple of times. We start with the first mention of homosexuality on American television, in 1954 with the Army-McCarthy hearings and travel to today with shows like Orange is the New black, passing through Queer as Folk, Will and Grace, The L Word, and in the end Pose. Everyone is great, with Billy Porter being my favorite in this docuseries, and everyone brings some personal story about themselves, about what they saw on television, and in doing so putting context to a broad analysis of the history of LGBTQ+ tribulations. Five episodes is I think the perfect number of episodes and the incredible editing makes this a binge worthy experience, weaving all the interviews together and truly making it feel like a big conversations between the people interviewed. And it shows the impact, the huge impact, representation on Tv has on everyday people but also to anyone who works or wants to work in the industry. This show is smart and grounded, showing what really is important, celebrating victories in representation, recognizing mistakes that have real consequences for real people and most importantly showing why it is vital for LGBTQ+ people to be able to tell their own stories. 10/10.
