During his nearly 50 years in show business, Bill Cosby became one of the most recognizable Black celebrities in America. With a career that included an astronomical rise on television in the mid-1960s; work in children’s programming and education; legendary stand-up performances and albums; and an epoch-defining hit sitcom, The Cosby Show, Cosby was a model of Black excellence for millions of Americans. But now, thanks to the brave and painful testimonies of dozens of women, we know there was a sinister reality to the man once extolled as “America’s Dad.”

W. Kamau Bell literally made a very sensitive and very careful piece of documentary work about one of the most influential comedians of all time but also one of the biggest monsters of all time. How do you talk about someone who paved the way for so many people when he ruined the lives of so many women? It's difficult and Bell knows so even going out of his way to interview some of Cosby's victims. It's difficult but it also can't be avoided, you have to acknowledge the work but when doing so Bell wants us not to be ignorant of how the context of the work has changed, and how we have to acknowledge those disenfranchised by the artist. It's definitely a documentary worth watching that might piss some people off, but Bell didn't make this to do such a thing, but rather to create understanding and meld all the wounds created when we discovered who Bill Cosby really was. It's a tragedy.

A clever chronicle of disappointment, the downfall of a myth, Dr. Huxtable meets Mr. Hyde. One of the most resounding descriptions of sexual abuse that broadens the look towards the depth of its consequences. Kamaus Bell reflects on the artist and the sexual predator, and on the "rape culture" that he has allowed (and allows) that defends the guilty and disapproves of the victims. The best definition is given by a victim: "Bill Cosby is a master at his craft. Whether it be acting, comedy or raping, he is a master."
