One must have all; or nothing. Yet, the threat – the threatening ease – of compromise lies, constantly, behind the debonair air of the film: reminding us that, no matter how far we go to find fresh air, one may well just run out of breath, eventually.

“Breathless” sees the most ridiculous gangster in the history of noir films entertain himself with an aspiring journalist through random vignettes for 90 minutes. It’s a movie famous for refusing the mannerism of traditional cinema, but its technical “innovations” seem more like the unintended mistakes of a naïve filmmaker. Even though its presentation still feels as young and restless as it probably did back in the day, the lack of anything else made it really hard to keep watching. I doubt I would have gotten to the end if I wasn’t aware of its undisputed cult-classic status amongst cinephiles.

What an introduction to the ’60s. The famous jump cuts were honestly pretty thrilling, and created this propulsive movement that felt like a shock wave (especially within the context of my century of films project.) I loved both Belmondo and Seberg, although I do think I find New Wave movies to be more formally interesting than emotionally gripping.
