One must have all; or nothing. Yet, the threat – the threatening ease – of compromise lies, constantly, behind the debonair air of the film: reminding us that, no matter how far we go to find fresh air, one may well just run out of breath, eventually.

“Breathless” sees the most ridiculous gangster in the history of noir films entertain himself with an aspiring journalist through random vignettes for 90 minutes. It’s a movie famous for refusing the mannerism of traditional cinema, but its technical “innovations” seem more like the unintended mistakes of a naïve filmmaker. Even though its presentation still feels as young and restless as it probably did back in the day, the lack of anything else made it really hard to keep watching. I doubt I would have gotten to the end if I wasn’t aware of its undisputed cult-classic status amongst cinephiles.

The editing often appears abrupt, disregarding the raccord between two consecutive shots. However, instead of harming it, it imparts a remarkable touch of personality. [spoiler] This can be observed when Michel flirts with Patricia in his car. The editing introduces a new shot with each new flirtati More

A key film of the late Fifties/early Sixties French New Wave, À bout de souffle (Breathless) opens with suave lowlife Michel Poiccard (Jean-Paul Belmondo) stealing a car. When he's caught speeding on the way to Paris and pursued by the police, Michel kills the officer. Desperate to collect s More

Jean-Paul Belmondo spends much of this film in just his boxers after his "Poiccard/Kovacs" character pinches a car, kills the pursuing police officer and the ends up taking refuge with his new journalism student friend "Patricia" (Jean Seberg). She's not quite aware of the extent of the trouble her More
