OK hear me out.........Last Action Hero is the most underrated film from the 90's and honestly I class it as almost a flawless Arnold Schwarzenegger film as it pokes fun at every Arnie film trope but it also has some of the best Arnie moments and to be honest it might be his best performance as he himself in this film plays an exaggerated version of himself.

To give the plot of the film it is about a boy who is obsessed with everything Arnie and his is also a young kid who is a cinema lover, this character is played by Austin O'Brien (Danny Madigan) who I am surprised I haven't seen in more and when I was a kid he was honestly one of the most relatable characters as which kid didn't wish they could escape their world and suddenly be in a film of their choice. Well in this film he gets to do this with the help of a magic ticket which lets him go into the latest Arnold romp and this film is just such a ride for both you the viewer and him throughout. It takes the p*ss out of all Arnolds Cliches but action films in general and you just find yourself in stitches at points.

Also when the film crosses back into the real world with the characters from the film, it just gets nail-biting as you don't know what is going to happen as the villain who is masterfully played by Charles Dance (Bendedict) "In this world the bad guys WIN!!" and honestly I feel like I am giving away too much already. PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE GIVE THE LAST ACTION HERO your attention again as I feel it was a film way ahead of it's time and if you get a chance to watch it in 4k then please do.

I would also like to say that John McTiernan is one of the best action directors of all time and I really hope we get something from him soon as cinephiles everywhere miss him.

Having just watched this for the first time in 2018, I wonder if Arnold Schwarzenegger had intended for this to be a sort of retirement movie. It very much has that vibe, and would have worked spectacularly to that end in a fun, meta, kind of way. But for better (_Maggie_) or worse (_Terminator 3_) Arnie just keeps on sluggin' and that's the world we live in.

So instead of that, I guess _Last Action Hero_ is really just a deconstruction of the over the top action movies the 80s and early 90s did with such aplomb. Is it a scathing criticism of them, or a love letter to them? I don't know, but _Last Action Hero_ works for me, and that's all I'm taking away from it.

_Final rating:★★★ - I liked it. Would personally recommend you give it a go._
