On election night in 1981, celebrations spill out onto the street and there is an air of hope and change throughout Paris. But for Elisabeth, her marriage is coming to an end and she will now have to support herself and her two teenage children. She finds work at a late-night radio show and encounters a troubled teenager named Talulah whom she invites into her home.

Like a love song that sounds beautiful until they start singing. Mikhael Hers films Paris with finesse, showing us the City of Light at the end of the night to the strains of subtle jazz, and I honestly could've watched that for 2 hours. But then the story drops in like an uninvited guest and the spell is broken. There's nothing inherently wrong with this tale of a lonely woman (a reliable Charlotte Gainsbourg) who takes in a stray (the magnetic Noée Abita) but the movie's nowhere near as stirring as its images. Paris in the 80's is recreated with exciting precision but, as for the rest, I wish this film had been an instrumental.
