I thought it was dumb. From the intro where he takes the scalp off a woman from just touching the knife on her head to meeting an online woman who happens to be a slut (acts like a porn actress because that's what women do dur) and he unoriginally kills her to the song from silence of the lambs, as she acts terribly. The point of view adds nothing. I'd say it even limits the experience and makes it all seem even more amateurish. Seems it's made to look like a video game perhaps? As he meets the art girl with the portfolio full of black and white photos I'm wondering if kids made this movie and if their life experience was limited to the Internet. He stabs a girl in the street and it's very obvious he's using a joke knife. It's not even masked well. Awful shot.
It's not scary either. Despite the POV it didn't feel particularly stalker-like at all. The music and direction didn't even help create tension at any point.
The effects were OK sometimes.
I'm not a massive fan of the original but I can see how it could gain some following and how people could like it. Spinell was also scary because he was a strong guy. Elijah Wood was a miss match.

Mannequinac!

Having not seen the original film that this is a remake of, I have no frame of reference. Entering into it oblivious to any sort of bias or guideline, this Maniac proves to be a nifty shocker, one that is not without style even as it puts churnings in your stomach.

It's the stylings that I imagine have upset a lot of horror fans, the first person approach and avant-garde sheens strip the pic of genuine suspense. Yet it's a brave film in that respect, as is the casting of Elijah Wood as the titular maniac.

Story is hardly original, boy had major mommy issues to deal with and has grown up disturbed. He has taken a career creating mannequins, but with real lady hair! Cue a bloody rampage of scalping - but wait! A pretty lady photographer has befriended him...

So it is what it is, a film that's grotty in narrative thrusts, yet one that's plush of cityscape photography and POV daring. An odd blend for sure, so it goes without saying, all these things need to be of interest to the viewer for it to butter your bloody sandwich. 7/10
