3 Thoughts After Watching ‘Near Dark’:

1. Very, very reminiscent of ‘The Lost Boys’.

2. It was an entertaining film, with a different take on vampires (without even mentioning the v-word), but it lacked depth and moved along at a brisk pace that never slowed down enough to become invested in its characters.

3. Bill Paxton was a scene-stealer here and should’ve been the last of the gang to go, rather than the first.

This isn’t for everyone, but I really enjoyed seeing Kathryn Bigelow’s work on this. Lance Henricksen is always a treat in horror films, and of course Bill Paxton always goes 100%.

I woke up at 2:30 in the morning...I'd left my TV on. This movie was playing on HBO. I was in a very suggestible state of mind...and, Bill Paxton was doing the vampire shuffle on top of the bar. Bedlam and mayhem, and, OMFG, it was scary AF.

When I saw it the next time all the way through, I was so touched by the love story between Adrian Pasdar and Jenny Wright's characters, but also by how each and every one of the other actors disappeared into their characters !

This was like, "The Matrix," of vampire movies for me.

I don't know how well it's aged, but I enjoyed every one of the eight or nine times I saw it !

I think I'm supposed to like _Near Dark_ and I bet it's a classic and whatever, but Bill Paxton's performance aside, this is a competently made yet ultimately humdrum contribution to vampire lore.

We can probably see that Bigelow will be a talented director one day, but the day she made this she edited it poorly and included so many WTFs that the movie is unintentionally a horror comedy. (The cure for vampirism is especially laughable.)

_Near Dark_ came out the same year as the stylistically similar _Lost Boys_, and you're going to think me a heathen, but that film was far more fun.

Cinema Paco 2: Image 3,5 / 5 and sound 3/5. This version of the vampires is curious.

An under-rated vampire western with a great cast. Bill Paxton especially is awesome. It's a bit better than Lost Boys that it came out the same year as. Just less popular.
Near Dark is more vampire flick meets a western meets the Terminator.

_"Yeah I get through here about once every 50 years... Make me a reservation."_

This was actually a **lot** better than I expected it to be, but don't be fooled: this is far more action than horror. One of the few movies about vampires that I've enjoyed seeing, perfect film to kick off my October with.

Sidenote:
thank God we've stopped ending films with freeze-frames.
