3 Thoughts After Watching ‘Near Dark’: 1. Very, very reminiscent of ‘The Lost Boys’. 2. It was an entertaining film, with a different take on vampires (without even mentioning the v-word), but it lacked depth and moved along at a brisk pace that never slowed down enough to become invested in its characters. 3. Bill Paxton was a scene-stealer here and should’ve been the last of the gang to go, rather than the first.

>"The night has its price." This isn’t for everyone, but I really enjoyed seeing Kathryn Bigelow’s work on this. Lance Henricksen is always a treat in horror films, and of course Bill Paxton always goes 100%.

I woke up at 2:30 in the morning...I'd left my TV on. This movie was playing on HBO. I was in a very suggestible state of mind...and, Bill Paxton was doing the vampire shuffle on top of the bar. Bedlam and mayhem, and, OMFG, it was scary AF. When I saw it the next time all the way through, I was so touched by the love story between Adrian Pasdar and Jenny Wright's characters, but also by how each and every one of the other actors disappeared into their characters ! This was like, "The Matrix," of vampire movies for me. I don't know how well it's aged, but I enjoyed every one of the eight or nine times I saw it !

I think I'm supposed to like _Near Dark_ and I bet it's a classic and whatever, but Bill Paxton's performance aside, this is a competently made yet ultimately humdrum contribution to vampire lore. We can probably see that Bigelow will be a talented director one day, but the day she made this she edited it poorly and included so many WTFs that the movie is unintentionally a horror comedy. (The cure for vampirism is especially laughable.) _Near Dark_ came out the same year as the stylistically similar _Lost Boys_, and you're going to think me a heathen, but that film was far more fun.

[3.9/10] Remake every film from the 1980s. Okay, maybe not all of them, but a lot of them. Because so many of them have great ideas, or good premises, or some compelling hook. But they’re all wasted on the cultural wasteland so much of cinema sunk into during the Reagan administration for reasons More

I'm pretty sure vampire is my least favorite horror sub-genre. I hardly see this film on any streaming services and it's finally on Shudder so I decided to give it a try. Now I get why people talk about it a lot. It's finger lickin’ good! Probably my favourite after _A Girl Walks Home More

Thirty years on, and _Near Dark_ still holds up. A young Bill Paxton steals the show as a Texas vampire who's equal parts bikie and cowboy, even amongst such stars as Lance Henriksen and Adrian Pasdar. One of the most influential vampire films of all time, it's vibrations can still be felt in the mo More
